Foo Fighters returning to rock out in New Zealand at two stadium shows

Foo Fighters have announced two huge stadium shows for New Zealand in January 2027.

They will play in Christchurch on 19 January, before performing at Auckland’s Western Springs Stadium on 22 January.

Hawkins had been a member of the Foo Fighters since 1997. They have become one of rock’s most popular bands, winning 12 Grammy Awards including Best Rock Album four times.

The Foo Fighters – currently made up of Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Pat Smear, Rami Jaffee and Ilan Rubin – have visited New Zealand several times. They were last here in January 2024.

General tickets go on sale 25 February.

Robert Walters identifies New Zealand’s key labour and salary trends for 2026

Auckland, New Zealand, 18th Feb 2026 - 2026 will be a year of strategic hiring, increased pressure on salaries, and rising workforce mobility across New Zealand, according to new research from global talent solutions partner Robert Walters.  

The findings come from its latest Salary Guide, launching today, which surveyed over 2,300 white-collar New Zealand professionals across 12 different industries.

Businesses are hiring again, skills shortages persist, and employees are carefully weighing where they work, what they earn, and whether to relocate. This combination is reshaping the workforce: organisations face pressure to attract and retain talent, address capability gaps, and balance pay with cost-of-living concerns, while employees are increasingly strategic about career moves and mobility. How companies respond now will have a direct impact on productivity, growth, and their ability to secure and retain the talent they need for success in the future.” 

Key labour market trends  

Hiring rebounds, but jobseekers remain cautious after 2025 turmoil

Market confidence is gradual but strengthening, with 76% of New Zealand businesses planning to hire in 2026, up from 66% in 2025. 

Hiring demand varies regionally. Canterbury leads hiring intent at 78%, followed by Auckland (75%) and Wellington (72%). 

Despite this uplift in business confidence, employee mobility has cooled. 53% of New Zealand professionals are considering a role change this year, down from 63% in 2025, suggesting a more cautious workforce. 

Shay comments: ”Hiring intent has increased since last year, signalling that businesses are ready to move forward. However, employees are taking a more considered approach. From conversations we’ve been having with job seekers, we know the unstable condition of the 2025 labour market is making people concerned about job prospects in 2026. Economic uncertainty over the past year has made many professionals very risk-aware. The labour market is gradually rebalancing, rather than surging.” 

Salary growth remains modest as cost-of-living pressures persist

In 2025, 57% of New Zealand professionals received a pay rise, although most increases fell within the modest 2.5%-5% range, limiting their real impact. 

67% of New Zealand businesses intend to offer salary increases in 2026, while 56% of professionals expect one. 

42% of employees feel underpaid, but 83% of employers believe salaries are keeping pace with the cost of living, highlighting a perception gap. 

Salary dissatisfaction varies regionally. In Canterbury, 46% of professionals do not believe their salary matches the cost of living. In Auckland this stands at 42%, and in Wellington 39%. 

Shay comments: ”As businesses come out of last year’s restructures, organisations have an opportunity to reassess remuneration. Where salary increases are not feasible, employers must focus on career progression, flexibility, and skills development. It’s no secret the movement of New Zealand talent to Australia is well underway. Dissatisfaction around pay is a high retention risk, especially as overseas markets actively target New Zealand talent.” 

Skills shortages squeeze productivity across key sectors

Skills shortages remain critical, with 81% of New Zealand employers experiencing gaps over the past year. 

Regional pressure varies, with 52% of Auckland employers reporting shortages, followed by Wellington (49%) and Canterbury (39%). 

The most acute gaps are in industry-specific expertise (52%), digital and technology capability (37%), and leadership skills (31%) - these areas closely linked to productivity and organisational performance. 

Hiring challenges are compounded by unsuitable applicants (62%) and a lack of formal qualifications (53%). 

 Shay comments: ”Skills shortages are a severe productivity issue. When capability gaps persist, delivery slows and growth opportunities are missed. 

New Zealand organisations must take a long-term view, investing in leadership development, digital capability, and structured workforce planning. Skills gaps directly impact productivity and growth, and with more talent continuing to move to Australia, this challenge will intensify unless decisive action is taken now. Waiting for the market to correct itself is no longer a viable strategy in a competitive global talent landscape.” 

AI adoption accelerates, but concerns remain

AI integration is gaining momentum. 86% of New Zealand businesses are actively promoting AI, and 70% of employers say AI skills are important. 

Adoption at employee level is already high, with 69% using AI in their roles. However, 51% express concern about AI’s future impact on their job.

Shay comments: ”New Zealand businesses are embracing AI at pace, but adoption must be matched with transparency and training. The fact that over half of employees are concerned about AI’s future impact highlights the importance of clear communication and structured upskilling. 

At the speed AI is developing, it’s critical that soft skills like leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving are not lost but actively encouraged alongside new technology. 

Done right, AI can increase efficiency, boost productivity, and complement human talent, supporting the goals outlined in New Zealand’s 2025 AI Strategy for a productive, future-ready workforce.” 

Rising relocation trends are creating a borderless workforce

Mobility remains a defining feature of the New Zealand workforce. 58% of professionals are open to relocating for work. 

Interest varies regionally. In Auckland, 64% would consider relocating, compared with 53% in Wellington and 51% in Canterbury. 

Australia is the most attractive destination, with 65% naming it as their top choice. Domestically, 54% would consider relocating within New Zealand. Internationally, 23% would consider moving to the UK and 21% to Europe. 

The primary drivers of relocation are higher salaries (71%), better job opportunities (65%), lifestyle changes (53%), and cost of living (38%). 

Interest in Australians relocating to New Zealand has increased this year to 17% (up from 2% in 2025).

Person killed by dogs in Kaihu, Northland, RNZ understands

St John confirmed an ambulance and helicopter were called to the scene around 11.22 this morning.

They referred further queries to police.

The incident comes amid growing calls for an overhaul of dog control laws.

A resident of the Far North community of Ahipara last week told RNZ residents had been arming themselves with sticks to protect against roaming dogs.

Young Vintner recognition supports next step for EIT wine student

EIT Bachelor of Viticulture and Wine Science student Ngaun Siau is preparing for a vintage placement at Craggy Range and an associate judging role at this year’s Hawke’s Bay Wine Awards.

The 27-year-old was awarded the Craggy Range Young Vintner Scholarship and Best Student Wine for her Penrose Cabernet Franc 2025 at last year’s Bayleys Hawke’s Bay Wine Awards.

“I didn’t expect that I would get it,” Ngaun says. “As a student, I study and make wine, but I never thought I would be able to achieve that kind of title.”

It is not the first time she has been recognised for her winemaking. Ngaun also received Best Student Wine honours the previous year for her Dalan Cabernet Franc 2024, marking back-to-back awards for the variety.

Ngaun says this year’s wine was produced from a vineyard in Maraekakaho, with contrasting vineyard conditions influencing a different winemaking approach.

“The vineyard conditions were completely different, so I chose a different winemaking path,” she says.

The wine’s name, Penrose, is inspired by the Penrose Staircase, a mathematical concept representing endless steps. Ngaun says the idea resonated with her because she produced a Cabernet Franc the previous year and wanted to continue making wine.

Originally from an agricultural region in Taiwan, Ngaun grew up watching her family harvest crops, sparking an early curiosity about where food and produce ultimately end up.

That interest, combined with a growing passion for sustainable agriculture, led her to Hawke’s Bay and enrolment in EIT’s Bachelor of Viticulture and Wine Science programme in 2023.

Throughout her studies, Ngaun gained experience across vineyards and wineries, working multiple vintages and developing a strong interest in regenerative viticulture. She says exposure to different vineyard systems and production styles has strengthened her understanding of terroir and grape quality.

Her focus on sustainability was reinforced through a regenerative viticulture tour in 2024 and later informed a research project exploring undervine cover cropping and its role in improving soil health.

Ngaun completed her studies at the end of last year and is set to graduate in April.

“These three years went very fast. But they were full of learning, challenges and moments I am very grateful for.”

She says the support of tutors and strong connections with the local wine industry have played a key role in her development.

Ngaun says the openness of the Hawke’s Bay wine community has been central to her growth as a student.

“The industry here is incredibly welcoming. Even very busy winemakers and viticulturists always make time to talk with students and share their knowledge.”

Looking ahead, Ngaun is preparing for her upcoming vintage placement at Craggy Range, where she will work alongside the winemaking team during the harvest in March.

She will also return to the EIT Hawke’s Bay campus in Taradale later this year as an associate judge as part of the Hawke’s Bay Wine Awards judging process.

While her immediate focus remains in Hawke’s Bay, Ngaun says she hopes to continue developing her skills through future vintages, with longer-term plans to pursue further study overseas.

“My roots will always be in wine. There is always more to learn, and that’s what keeps me motivated.”

Lifelong connection to te reo Māori leads EIT graduate into the classroom

Jo-Anna Tahuri grew up speaking te reo Māori, but her studies at EIT’s Te Whatukura helped deepen her understanding of the language she now teaches to the next generation.

Originally from Whakatāne, Jo-Anna (Ngāti Kahungunu ki te Wairoa, Ngāti Awa and Tūhoe) moved to Te Tairāwhiti in 2018 to study and be closer to whānau, enrolling at EIT at a time when she was still working out her long-term direction.

“Studying Māori was something I was familiar with. I thought I would just do six months while I figured out what I wanted to do and then I just stayed for so long.”

Jo-Anna Tahuri began studying a NZ Certificate in Te Reo Māori at EIT and left with a Bachelor of Arts (Māori) Honours.

She initially began with the NZ Certificate in Te Reo Māori (Level 3) before going straight into the NZ Diploma in Te Reo Māori (Immersion) (Level 5) and then the Bachelor of Arts (Māori) and later her Honours, which she finished in 2022.

Growing up, te reo Māori had always been part of Jo-Anna’s life, both at home and at kōhanga reo during her early years.

“I thought I knew Māori. Then I started studying properly and realised there was so much more depth to the language.”

A highlight of her time at EIT was the whānau-based environment at Te Whatukura, which she says became central to her experience.

“That made the whole experience. It became my second home. Because I was so unfamiliar with Gisborne, I got to know all the people there and they became like another family to me.”

The supportive atmosphere extended beyond fellow students to the teaching staff. “The tutors also have a lot to do with the environment,” Jo-Anna says.

After completing her honours degree, Jo-Anna studied teaching before taking up her current role as a Year 1 and 2 teacher at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngā Uri a Māui.

“I love it. Everything I learned at EIT feeds into what I do now,” the 26-year-old says.

Teaching has been a lifelong dream, inspired by a strong family connection to education, and her experience with teachers as a child.

“I come from a family full of teachers. It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was little.”

“When I was at school, I remember all the teachers who believed in me and knew what I could do, and I wanted to be that teacher for other kids, especially our Māori kids,” she says.

She remains a strong advocate for Te Whatukura and encourages others to consider studying there.

“I tell everybody to go there. The tutors and the environment make such a difference.”

Looking back, she says her time at EIT shaped both her career and her confidence.

“It helped me grow. It prepared me for where I am now, and I’m really proud of that.”

Pareputiputi Nuku, Pouarataki, Te Ūranga Waka, says: “We are very proud of what she has accomplished at such a young age”.

Can I put that down the kitchen sink?

We’ve all heard the warnings about wet wipes and fatbergs but the kitchen sink is often where complacency creeps in. A splash of pan oil here or a rinse of leftover sauce there might seem harmless at first.

According to plumber Marc Brouwer, who has worked across Australia and New Zealand for 22 years, kitchen drain blockages are an everyday callout.

“It can range from the original plumbing that may have been installed, like the wrong pipe sizing. It can be due to old pipes… Then in most cases it’s all just self-inflicted, which is pouring oil down the sink.”

Dense oils and meat fats are a big culprit for blocked drains and pipes, says plumber Marc Brouwer.

Can artificial intelligence legally be an inventor?

An American computer scientist wants New Zealand’s courts to decide whether AI can legally be an inventor in a global test case next week.

Stephen Thaler is seeking a patent for a new type of food container.

The sticking point is he named his artificial intelligence system, called DABUS, as the inventor.

The Patent Office turned his application down in 2022, and the High Court agreed, with both saying an “inventor” had to be human.

Thaler was set to challenge that in the Court of Appeal on February 24.

His lawyer Clive Elliott KC said when Thaler filled out his application for a patent, he was simply stating the truth.

“He didn’t actually invent this food container, it was his machine,” he said.

“He invented what he calls an autonomous invention machine, in other words, an AI system which is itself able to invent.”

But in its 2023 decision, the High Court said the law in New Zealand did not allow for DABUS to get the credit.

“If the legislators had intended to allow granting of patents in New Zealand for inventions devised solely by non-humans such as artificial intelligences, or life forms other than human beings they would have drafted the Act to accommodate these possibilities specifically and explicitly,” it said.

But Elliot said New Zealand’s Patents Act was only passed in 2013 so parliament knew about artificial intelligence when they created it – and did not exclude it.

Auckland University law professor and intellectual property expert Alex Sims said beyond the technicalities of the case, there was a bigger picture about whether AI could truly be an inventor.

“What AI does is it’s hoovering up human creativity and then it’s using that to produce something. So some people would actually argue that it’s not being creative because it’s all premised on what has gone before,” she said.

Thaler was part of a group taking cases about AI and patents around the world to try to set a precedent.

Auckland University lecturer Joshua Yuvaraj followed his – unsuccessful – attempt in Australia.

People had been at the heart of intellectual property law as it developed over centuries, because there was no mechanism for creation other than the human mind, he said.

“That is why AI is challenging that notion because AI, it appears, can do a lot of what the human mind can do is the argument. That is the tension that IP law is facing.”

Patent were seen as important because they would determine whether someone’s designs could be protected if they were created by AI.

“Say you use an AI to make a new type of e-scooter or a new type of kettle or a new coffee machine, if you can’t register that patent then someone can take that idea and make money off your idea,” he said

Sims said many countries tended to be in lock step when it came to intellectual property law.

Most were grappling with the AI patent challenge.

An inquiry in the UK had considered the issue and those it talked to had mixed views, she said.

Some people worried by not allowing AI patents, it could stifle creativity and innovation because people would tend not to use AI.

Others worried letting AI be an inventor would push people out of the creative process, she said.

Thaler and his group were testing the law in several countries but had been unsuccessful everywhere but South Africa, which was considered to have a unique style of IP law.

Minister to attend AI Impact Summit in India

Science, Innovation and Technology and Universities Minister Dr Shane Reti will visit India this week to attend the flagship artificial intelligence (AI) Impact Summit, strengthening international AI partnerships and unlocking opportunities for New Zealand. The theme for the summit is ‘AI for People, Planet and Progress’.

“Attendance at this summit ensures New Zealand has a seat at the table, along with senior international Ministers and officials, to help shape global AI standards, while providing opportunities to strengthen international partnerships and drive economic growth,” Dr Reti says.

“As highlighted in the New Zealand AI Strategy, AI has enormous potential to lift productivity and grow our economy, with some estimates predicting that generative AI alone could add $76 billion, around 15 per cent of GDP, by 2038.

“Our government is focused on unlocking economic opportunity through AI adoption, while ensuring appropriate guardrails. That’s why we are investing up to $70 million over seven years to support innovative AI research and applications, develop world-class expertise, and sharpen New Zealand’s competitive edge.

“This visit is also a chance to strengthen our science, innovation and technology relationships and promote New Zealand as an outstanding destination for international education.

“India is a growing powerhouse in science and technology. While New Zealand already has strong links between universities and research organisations, there is significant potential for greater research collaboration between our two countries.

Hamilton woman assaulted in her home after confronting intruders

A Hamilton woman has been seriously assaulted in her own home after confronting two men trying to get inside.

Police said the assault happened on Clarkin Road in Fairfield at about 9pm on Saturday.

The woman was injured and needed hospital treatment.

Police said her attackers took off toward River Road.

Detective Senior Sergeant Neilson said police would be carrying out reassurance patrols in the area.

“Nobody should be unsafe in their own home and the victim is understandably shaken. We’re providing wrap around support for her.”

Police are appealing to the public for information, and say even the smallest detail could be crucial.

“If you know something about this abhorrent crime, please come forward as soon as possible.

“We’re still working to establish the full circumstances and ask anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the neighbourhood around Clarkin Road to review the video and contact us if it shows suspicious or unusual activity.”

Police were particularly interested in the period between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday.

To cultivate practical talent for the cybersecurity sector, the sixth “HKCERT Capture The Flag Challenge 2025” (HKCERT CTF Challenge) was successfully organised by the Digital Policy Office (DPO), HKPC, and HKCERT. This year’s competition was elevated to the first-ever adoption of an attack–defence mode, closely replicating the network setup of real enterprises. Participants experienced first-hand hacking techniques, system vulnerability analysis, threat intelligence gathering, and coordinated response in a simulated real-world environment. Through completing multiple tasks within a limited time, the competition also allowed them to break through the traditional classroom theoretical framework, gain practical experience and build confidence. The event attracted around 1,940 young contestants, an increase of nearly 40% from last year’s 1,385 participants, reaching a record high for the competition. Contestants included teams from Hong Kong, Chinese Mainland, Asia, and Europe, fostering cross-regional exchange and collaboration. In the finals, three local teams and one overseas team were awarded gold prizes in the Secondary School, Tertiary Institution, Open Category, and International Category respectively, while Sing Yin Secondary School received the “Best School Award”. Participants Share Practical Experience Integrating AI into Attack and Defence
The competition was well received by contestants for its innovative format and realistic offensive and defensive environment, offering a valuable platform for learning and exchange.
