Good evening –

Our hosts, the Pacific Cooperation Broadcasting Limited, particularly Board Chair Brent Impey and Chief Executive Natasha Melesia; 

Pacific broadcasting partners from across the region; 

Members of the diplomatic corps; 

Members of the media, government, and other partners; 

 It is a pleasure to be here today on the PCBL’s 10th Anniversary, marking 10 years of Pasifika TV on air across our Pacific region. Happy anniversary and warm greetings to you all. 

 It’s great you are all able to come together here in New Zealand to celebrate this momentous achievement. And as with many small broadcasting operations across the Pacific, collegiality, creativity, and the ability to solve problems is essential. 

 We are proud to have been your partner every step of the way. One of our great strengths as a region is our commitment to democratic governance. The work you do, as the Fourth Estate, helps to make our societies more connected and more robust.

New Zealand’s Place in the Pacific 

 We have spoken throughout this term about the importance New Zealand places on our region, the Pacific. This region is a core pillar of New Zealand’s foreign policy. Why? Because New Zealand is a Pacific country – we share history, geography, DNA, culture, sports, and religion. 

 Around one in four New Zealanders have Māori or Pasifika heritage. These connections shape our worldview and the responsibilities we accept as a member of the Pacific family. 

 And we see New Zealanders enriching Pacific countries too – through the expansion of New Zealand businesses into the region, through churches, and sports, our tourists, and those supporting development. This two-way, reciprocal exchange is essential. 

 Travel and Recent Engagements 

 The Pacific Reset reinforces that our identity, our security and our prosperity are inextricably linked with the Pacific. We have not only increased investment through our International Development Cooperation programme in the region, but we have been present, listening to our Pacific partners, and carrying those messages home. 

 Our travel has reaffirmed a simple but enduring truth: in the Pacific, there is no substitute for ‘talanoa’, having face-to-face engagement, listening carefully, and strengthening the bonds shaped by the challenges we face and our shared region and history.  Our recent engagements underscored these priorities and highlighted the deep alignment between New Zealand and our Pacific partners. 

 During our recent visit to Kiribati, our discussions and the signing of a new Statement of Partnership deepened a relationship grounded in respect, cooperation, and a mutual commitment to addressing shared challenges. This visit also marked a significant milestone for us: during the current Parliamentary term, we have now visited all 17 fellow Pacific Islands Forum member states, demonstrating New Zealand’s steadfast dedication to regional partnership.

 During these visits we saw the results of New Zealand’s work with Pacific partners to build better infrastructure, to manage our fisheries, strengthen public financial management, education and health systems, and to improve disaster preparedness. 

The New Betio Hospital, which we visited in South Tarawa in January, is a great example of our approach.  It is a high-quality, fit for purpose facility, built on a strong partnership between the Governments of New Zealand and Kiribati, with support from Japan and the Asian Development Bank.  It stands as a symbol of the impact we can have by working together to support Pacific development. 

Connectivity 

 Everywhere we’ve been, our counterparts have stressed the importance of connectivity: physical and digital. Pacific Leaders are clear to us that secure, resilient, and affordable digital infrastructure is essential to national development and regional cooperation. Digital systems underpin access to education and health, enable financial inclusion, expand economic opportunities, and connect remote communities to essential services. It means people can access online content, including broadcasting. 

 Achieving meaningful digital integration requires investment in undersea cables, satellite connectivity, and cyber resilience. It requires building local digital skills, supporting safe online spaces, and strengthening regional interoperability so systems can work across borders. 

 For New Zealand, partnering on digital transformation is both a practical responsibility and an expression of our Pacific identity. Harnessing digital transformation reduces distances, enhances disaster response, supports transparency, and enables broader participation in the digital economy. Ultimately, digital integration is not simply a technical challenge—it is an investment in sovereignty, opportunity, and the unity of our Blue Pacific Continent. 

 Technology is moving quickly in the region to support broadcasting.  As Pacific broadcasters move to digital, local broadcasters begin to have access to multiple channels. This creates an opportunity for digital transformation platforms as connectivity improves, spreading its reach to wider Pacific audiences. 

 This is important because we know that broadcasting and media in the Pacific play a critical role in fostering democracy, ensuring safety, and preserving culture in communities spread across the vast Pacific Ocean.  Media supports democracy by holding those in power to account, providing public service announcements, and promoting civic education. 

 Our ongoing support to PCBL reinforces the importance that New Zealand places on media freedom and a resilient, vibrant and regionally connected Pacific media sector. PCBL is a critical partner. It connects the world to the region during emergencies. And it supports local broadcasters to produce factual and locally relevant media content. New Zealand has been a proud provider of free-to-air content to the PCBL, and in the spirit of our shared love for sports, we are launching an initiative to support PCBL’s capacity to competitively negotiate and secure rights to show major live sports to Pacific audiences. 

 Talanoa is critical in the Pacific, but distance is a challenge. This has been raised with us on our travels, and we have been determined to break down that barrier, including through supporting leaders get to key regional meetings such as the Pacific Islands Forum. If we want regional responses to our challenges, we need regional leaders and our people to connect. 

 The Government is backing up these words with action. I’m pleased to announce tonight that from the 1st of June this year, we are decreasing the total cost of applying for a visitor visa for Pacific nationals from $216 to just $161, for a 12-month period. This is part of New Zealand’s ongoing work to reduce the barriers, including cost, to Pacific visitors travelling to New Zealand. 

This is another practical update to visitor visa settings that reduces cost, supports easier travel, and helps to strengthen the relationships that matter most. This builds on earlier changes, such as longer visa durations and the current visa-free trial for Pacific travellers coming from Australia. 

 Partnership in difficult times 

 Strengthening our people-to-people connections is important when our strategic environment in the region is increasingly complex. The region is navigating sharper great power competition alongside climate and transnational risks that do not respect borders. In these difficult times, regionalism is essential. 

Pacific leaders are clear: they seek cooperation, stability, and sovereignty — not division.  The Pacific Islands Forum’s 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent remains our shared framework for long-term resilience, security, and prosperity. 

 New Zealand’s position is steady and principled. Pacific countries know they can turn to New Zealand in times of need. We’re continue to invest a range of initiatives that invests in the Pacific preparedness against physical and cyber threats, without adding pressure or duplication. We will also never shy away from having frank, mature, conversations with our Pacific family of nations, and we will continue to advocate for the Pacific – including on the global stage. 

 In an increasingly contested world, values matter. Our collective approaches and our regional architecture, like the Pacific Islands Forum, help guard against the ability of big, powerful countries to divide us. Together we can hold firm to our principles, enhancing the power of the region as a whole. Throughout these challenging times, our guiding principle is unchanged: to work with Pacific partners in ways that honour sovereignty, respond to local priorities, and support long-term resilience. 

 As we look forward to New Zealand’s hosting of the Pacific Islands Forum in 2027, New Zealand will be working to ensure our region is connected and unified. We will use our hosting of the Forum to strengthen the region’s relationships with partners who share our regional values, and who can contribute positively to the region’s prosperity and resilience and to its development. 

 Consensus, respect, and dialogue have defined Pacific diplomacy since the early years of regionalism – they are The Pacific Way. The Pacific Way guides us to engage constructively, to listen carefully, and to move forward collectively even when the issues before us are challenging. At a time of shifting geopolitical currents, the Pacific Way reminds us that partnership is a strength, that sovereignty is to be respected, and that solutions must be Pacific-led and Pacific-owned. 

 Closing 

 The Pacific has a long tradition of navigating vast oceans with courage, vision, and unity. New Zealand is committed to continue working within the Pacific family of nations—listening first, aligning second, and delivering always. 

 In closing, let us reflect on the goal that was established a decade ago by PBCL – to build and support an empowered, resilient and sustainable Pacific broadcasting community which supports informed, open and democratic societies, and regional cohesion. 

 Congratulations again on the first 10 years and all the best for the remainder of your conference.

Forty-nine new cops march out in March.

Friends and family members came from all over New Zealand today and celebrated alongside the newly attested constables of the 393 recruit wing at the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua.

Police Commissioner Richard Chambers addressed the graduating wing alongside Associate Minister of Police, the Honourable Casey Costello, members of the police executive and wing patron, Keven Mealamu MNZM.

Top award winner and first in wing Constable Aaron Rock swapped his career in firefighting and emergency medical (EMT) work for a new role in Policing.

“I will be forever grateful for my family’s sacrifices and unwavering support. They push me constantly to become a better version of myself. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their love.”

Aaron will be based in Central District.

Leadership Award Winner, Constable Harawira Smith -Ngāti Kahungunu and Te Arawa, says “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of Aotearoa. I am proud to stand alongside every member of wing 393.”

Harawira will be based in the  Bay of Plenty.

Deployment:
The new constables will start their first day of duty in their Police districts on the week beginning Monday 23 March 2026 and will continue their training on the job as probationary constables.

Tāmaki Makaurau receives a total of 19 new officers (Auckland City 5, Waitematā 7, Counties Manukau 7), Waikato 5, Bay of Plenty 6, Eastern 1, Central 7, Wellington 8, Tasman 2, Southern 1.

Moana on the Blues: ‘They don’t want us here’

Asked whether the Blues rivalry is personal, Moana Pasifika coach Fa’alogo Tana Umaga didn’t hesitate.

“Oh f*** yeah.”

Umaga and his men say they have felt a general sense of derision from the other side of the bridge since their inception .

“I don’t know if they [the Blues] realise there are two professional rugby teams in this city, but we do know that they don’t want us here.”

Umaga clarified his scorn is reserved for the exec suite at Blues HQ, not the team.

“We’ve got nothing against the playing group, nothing against the staff that work in there. But the people that make decisions have made it very hard for us to survive over here.

“That’s why they are our greatest rivals because they want us to see us not do well, not thrive. I struggle with that when rugby’s in a place where we’re at.”

One particular narrative which came from the Blues in 2025 has incensed Umaga.

“They believe that they’re representing the Pacific. Well, a Pacific team’s here, but you’re not willing to assist us for the betterment of rugby.

“I do struggle with that. That’s why this game does mean a lot to us.”

Under their current licensing agreement, Moana can only host five games in Auckland per season, due to fears it would saturate the viewing market.

Umaga said this was pushed by the Blues, who have continued to prove a barrier to the new franchise.

“We’re only allowed five games here. When our game against Tonga didn’t go through straight away, we had the Northland Union come to us and say, ‘we’d love to have you’, which they’ve done numerous times and the Blues said ‘no that’s in our region, you can’t go there’.

He said they similarly tried to block Moana from playing at Pukekohe two weeks ago, technically a Chiefs region, but Umaga alleges the Blues attempted to stop them as it fell within the Super City boundary.

“So that’s what we’re up against.”

The Moana coach drew parallels to the difficulties the franchise has had trying to establish a foothold in Auckland, with the daily battles faced by their ancestors who came to Aotearoa.

“We just have to look back enough in our past as Pacific Islanders around how tough it is for us here. How our families have fought to provide for us here and give us an opportunity in this great country.

“So it’s nothing new for us as a small entity, trying to grow and build for the betterment of our people that have come behind us.”

Blues CEO Karl Budge said he felt Umaga was trying to create a “bit of extra spice” against their cross-town rivals ahead of Sunday’s game.

“Tana was one of my idols growing up and I have a huge amount of respect for him as a player and a coach, and he is entitled to his opinions.”

Budge did not respond directly to Umaga’s allegations of attempting to block them from playing in Northland and South Auckland.

Instead, Budge talked up the importance of working together for the betterment of the sport in the region.

“It has been great to see our two proud clubs work closely together to promote the game and ensure rugby fans, be they in Blues or Moana Pasifika jerseys, get out and support their team.

“We have really enjoyed the rivalry we’ve created on the field and this weekend will be no different.”

Government supports Pacific cultures at Polyfest

The Government is investing in the world’s largest Pacific festival, Polyfest, supporting Pacific culture, young people and families, says Pacific Peoples Minister Dr Shane Reti. 

 

“Polyfest, which celebrated 50 years last year, is an important celebration of Pacific culture and youth. It showcases the pride and strength of our Pacific young people. Their leadership through culture, strengthens families, communities and New Zealand. The Government is proud to support this event again in 2026 with $60,000 from the Ministry for Pacific Peoples,” Dr Reti says.  

 

“I’m pleased we are making this investment because a vibrant culture is important to Pacific communities, but so is their safety, their children’s education and health, and quality of life overall.  

“The Government is helping Pacific people by fixing the basics and building the future, including making them safer with 49,000 fewer victims of violent crime and repeat youth offending down 22 per cent. We have also put in $1 million to support Pacific Wardens,” says Dr Reti.  

“Pacific kids are doing better in school with children meeting expected levels in phonics improving from 27 per cent up to 43 per cent and childhood immunisation rates at 82.6 per cent. More than 300 Pacific students are building a future through Toloa STEM scholarships. 

“Quality of life is being improved with significant investment into Pacific housing, including Our Whare Our Fale delivering up to 300 homes, plus 41 homes through the Pacific Affordable Homes Fund. Alo Vaka has supported more than 300 Pacific people into better paying jobs, while inflation has more than halved and mortgage rates are down. 

“Maintaining family connections is also important to Pacific people. The Government is making it more affordable with visitor visas for Pacific citizens travelling to New Zealand, dropping in June. Through these initiatives, the Government is uplifting Pacific peoples across the country,” Dr Reti says. 

The 51st annual Polyfest, including the Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa, Tonga, and Diversity stages, will run from 18 to 21 March 2026 at Manukau Sports Bowl, with the theme:  

Ko au ko te Taiao! Ko te Taiao ko au! He Toa Taiao Taiohi nō te Moana nui a Kiwa, āke, ake, ake! The environment lives in me, as I live in it – a ‘Pacific Youth Eco-Warrior’ for generations to come. 

Te Paparewa Māori (formerly called the Māori stage) will be held from 30 March to 2 April 2026 at Due Drop Events Centre, Manukau.

Ex Chatham Islands Council chief executive Paul Eagle apologises as audit exposes ‘excessive’ spending

An auditor-general’s report into Chatham Islands Council spending has found former chief executive Paul Eagle should not have been in control of a project to upgrade his own accommodation, after costs ballooned by more than $250,000.

It also revealed Eagle edited or created quotes and contracts, and said the former Rongotai MP’s handling of documents was misleading and demonstrated exceptionally poor judgement.

The report – tabled in Parliament on Thursday – was instigated following concerns about spending that could be seen to give private benefit to staff.

Eagle took up the position as council chief executive in the Chatham Islands shortly after the retirement of the previous chief executive in August 2023. The job included the use of a home which – ahead of Eagle’s appointment – had a $200,000 project approved to address overdue maintenance.

The inquiry found Eagle made multiple additions to the project, including expensive kitchenware and electrical work, that suppliers considered to be excessive.

It also uncovered an array of deficiencies in council policies relating to procurement, conflicts of interest, staff expenses and fiscal reporting as well as “misalignment” between existing policies and how they were put into practice by Eagle and council staff.

In a letter included in the report findings, Eagle – who resigned last month – apologised and said his actions did not meet the standards expected of himself and his role.

Inquiry raises ‘serious integrity questions’

The council – which served about 600 people living on Chatham and Pitt Islands – relied heavily on Crown funding for both its operational and capital spending.

Auditor-General Grant Taylor and Assistant Auditor-General Melanie Webb said a project to refurbish the home which housed the council’s chief executive was not well managed, and changes Eagle requested “increased the costs beyond what was necessary”.

Quotes and contracts for the work on the property were found to have been created or edited by Eagle, as well as procurement memorandums created by him in 2025 had been backdated to the previous year.

“Individually, any of those examples would be concerning. Together they raise serious integrity questions for the council to contend with,” the report’s authors wrote.

“The information that the chief executive provided was misleading. Specifically, it created an incorrect picture about when certain events occurred (for example, when a contract was signed) or whether they had happened at all.

“We consider that the chief executive’s actions were unacceptable and demonstrated exceptionally poor practice and judgement.

“We have not reached a view on the legality of the chief executive’s actions. In this case, we consider it sufficient to draw the council, Parliament, and the public’s attention to the matter.”

The report said the significant cost of the project and the risk the upgrade to the house could be perceived as benefiting Eagle and his family should have instigated approval by the council or one-up approval by the mayor or deputy mayor, in line with the council’s sensitive expenditure policy.

“However, the chief executive effectively had sole control and oversight of the house upgrade project. He incurred that expenditure on the council’s behalf and approved most of the spending,” they wrote.

Eagle apologises: ‘I panicked’

In a letter accompanying the report, Eagle acknowledged its findings and apologised for the impact of his performance in the role.

“I started as chief executive of the council in late 2023, three months earlier than planned and, because of the illness of the outgoing chief executive, did not receive a formal, structured induction process covering the policies, processes, systems and documentation expected of the role. I wholeheartedly accept now that I should have sought clarity and support for this process.”

Eagle said that documentation and information provided to explain his actions to the inquiry also “fell short” of expected standards.

“In hindsight, I recognise I panicked when I realised documentation was incomplete and I tried to fix this. I deeply regret that those actions did not meet the standards I expect of myself and my role.”

Cost soared as Eagle took control

Ahead of Eagle’s appointment, a 2021 estimate of the cost of the building’s upgrades was $152,250 (plus GST) and the original budget was set at $200,000.

The final cost of the project was $460,001.65. Another $37,739.19 was also spent on rent to house Eagle and his family as the work went ahead.

In early November 2023 a revised quote from builders (dated 25 October) – which included some, but not all of Eagle’s suggestions for additional upgrades to home – allocated $10,000 for Fisher and Paykel kitchen appliances.

Eagle had contacted the building company on 26 October about installing Miele kitchen appliances at a cost of $18,102.45. The revised quote was approved by the mayor and deputy mayor after Eagle sent it on to them on 7 November. But the inquiry found Eagle had ordered the Miele appliances over a month earlier, on 30 September.

“We saw little sign of any consideration of containing costs during the project. We also consider that the chief executive made spending choices that were not moderate and conservative,” the authors wrote.

“Purchasing expensive appliances for the kitchen and carrying out extensive electrical work that suppliers working on the project widely considered to be excessive were particularly questionable.”

Eagle’s wife caught up in potential conflict of interest

Eagle was found to have directly engaged with consultancy services without following council procurement processes and failed to store contract documentation in the council’s systems.

“There was a pattern of the chief executive failing to ensure that contracts were prepared and signed before work started. The contracts signed on the council’s behalf were generally retrospective, in whole or in part,” the authors wrote.

The council also failed to properly manage a conflict of interest which arose after a proposal to subcontract Eagle’s wife, Miriam Eagle, as on-island project lead on the council’s 30 year strategy. This occurred as a part of a $109,600 contract variation signed off by the mayor in July 2024.

“The only measure that the council took to manage the conflict was one-up approval of the contract by the mayor. The chief executive continued to manage the contract and the council did not hold the contract centrally in its system,” the authors wrote.

The report noted no conflict of interest policy was in place at that time, but a policy was put in place in December 2024.

Inconsistencies were also identified with information provided to the inquiry by Eagle concerning consultancy services.

Lack of detail and control of credit cards and expense claims

The inquiry also found deficiencies for the management of council credit card use and reimbursement claims.

It said staff did not provide enough detail to justify claims and separate systems for reviewing credit card spending and reimbursement claims hampered oversight of expenses.

The report identified insufficient detail on “unusually high” spending for Eagle and other council staff on food and other purchases.

Flights to and from the Islands which were allocated specifically to Eagle – as a part of his employment contract – were also used to transport his wife and child.

“Staff were generally aware that the chief executive had this contractual entitlement, but there were no procedures to govern how the contractual entitlement was used. In our view, this left staff in a difficult position because they had no guidance about what the council considered acceptable use of the entitlement.

“Using the contractual entitlement for family members’ travel does not appear to be consistent with the principles of the sensitive expenditure policy,” the authors wrote.

Recommendations

The report highlighted concerns over “the misalignment between the council’s policy and practice, the lack of effective controls over spending and/organisational integrity and ethical leadership”.

“The combination of these factors makes it difficult for Parliament and the public to have confidence in the council’s decision-making about how it spends public money,” the authors wrote.

The report said the council needed to examine staff training around spending, and more effectively track and monitor invoices.

“In response to our draft report, the council told us it had engaged with another local authority to obtain advice about improvements to the council’s internal controls,” the authors wrote.

“The council acknowledged that more transparent reporting to the elected membership is necessary and said it would establish a framework of transparent and regular updates to the elected membership.”

During the inquiry some staff spoke of a “toxic” working environment and said concerns raised about spending had been dismissed by senior leaders although this was refuted by the former mayor.

The council said it planned to “reflect on its organisational culture” and had established a chief executive review committee to monitor chief executive performance.

‘I had to turn my phone off’: Tana Umaga on All Blacks coaching speculation

The speculation surrounding his All Blacks appointment became so overwhelming, Fa’alogo Tana Umaga had to turn off his phone.

On Wednesday afternoon, rumours spread rapidly that Umaga was set to be announced as an assistant to newly appointed All Blacks coach, Dave Rennie.

However, Umaga insists nothing has been set in stone.

“I don’t really deal in speculation. I’m really honoured and privileged to be involved in the conversation. But it’s just that. I suppose it was my turn this week. I saw there’s a lot of names involved in who Rens is looking for.

“My family are the ones that are letting me know what’s happening and I’m getting a lot of these texts, so I had to turn my phone off.”

The Moana Pasifika head coach was coy about the conjecture, but hinted that he did have interest in the gig.

“There was a bit of interest in terms of having a chat with him [Rennie] from my agent to see if anything comes up, and said ‘you wouldn’t turn that down, would you?’ So we’re just waiting for those things to happen, if it happens, it happens. You always want to set goals for yourself, you want to be part of the best and involved with the best. In my mind, the All Blacks have always been the best.

“Until it’s a done deal and everything’s down on paper. It’s speculation. It’s great to be in that conversation, but it is a bit of a nuisance right now at this stage.”

Umaga, who was coached by a rookie Rennie in 2000 as the Wellington Lions won their first NPC title in 14 years, said Rennie’s appointment was a smart one.

“He doesn’t let much fluster him, he is very precise about what he wants and what he believes in, that looks like a calmness and a steadiness to anything that he becomes a part of. He’s added value everywhere he’s been.

“I think he’s very particular around the way he wants to play and the way he sees the game. I’m a big believer in that myself. I think the game’s awesome – it’s just making sure that the way we deliver it is simple for our players to understand. Nowadays, the players can get overwhelmed. So trying to simplify as much, and I think that’s one of his strengths is that.

“And obviously culturally, he’s very big on connection. And again, that’s what I enjoy too. So those are probably the key things that stand out for me.”

The former All Black skipper admits it’s been tough to see the All Blacks lose some aura on the world stage.

However, he believes they can rebuild the empire.

“That’s an exciting challenge for Dave and his group that’s coming in. We’re saying that we’re feeling it here because we’ve been knocked off our perch as number one, but we’re not far away. The previous group weren’t far away and now it’s been given to someone else and so they’ve got to try and get us back up to the top.”

Blues target bigger crowds in fan battle with Warriors

The Blues want a bigger slice of Auckland’s sporting crowd – and the club’s new chief executive believes they can close the gap with the Warriors.

Both the Super Rugby and NRL seasons are underway with the Blues hosting matches at Eden Park and the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium.

The Warriors typically pull bigger crowds than the Blues. In 2025, the Warriors averaged almost 24,000 people through the gates for home games, with the Blues averaging around 15,000.

Blues chief executive Karl Budge, the former boss of Auckland’s ASB Tennis Classic said the Warriors are on top in the oval ball battle, but the gap is closing.

“I think the Warriors are doing an unbelievably good job,” Budge told RNZ’s Morning Report.

“The entertainment experience at the Warriors games is absolutely brilliant. They’re doing a great job and something we can learn a lot from. The reality for us is we’re only about 20% behind where they are. Our first two games so far this season, we’ve hit 20,000 people through the gates.”

Eden Park has a capacity of about 45,000 with Mt Smart Stadium about 25,000. Budge said the size of the Blues home ground, which is a lot larger than any other Super Rugby stadium in New Zealand, brings unique challenges and opportunities.

“When you 20,000 at Eden Park, it does leave a lot of empty seats in a 45,000 seat stadium. But It’s a privilege to have a stadium the size of Eden Park and we’ve just got to put on a better entertainment experience to make sure that we can get north of that number of 25,000 people through the gate.

“We know we’ve got a long way to go to put on a complete entertainment offering, not just a rugby match.”

So what does a “complete entertainment offering” entail? Budge said it’s about finding the right balance for fans who have different ideas about what they want from a Super Rugby match.

“We’ve got to try and fuse our traditional rugby fan that likes listening to the game and focusing on the 80 minutes, with the new crowd that is very entertainment first,” Budge said.

“The rugby is almost a by-product of the entertainment experience. It’s first and foremost a social gathering and an opportunity to be part of something, a bit of community belonging. Those two things aren’t always perfectly aligned. So we’ve got to be really purposeful around the precincts that we create and try and make sure that the offering is giving everybody an opportunity to enjoy what they’re looking for.”

Budge said he’s seeing some positive results from some early initiatives from the Blues.

“Our kids zone that we partnered with Lego on is going great guns. We’ve almost sold that out for both the first two games.

“The corner, which is more of our entertainment first sort of party zone, that did sell out on Saturday night.”

Budge said was pleasing to see the new offerings starting to get some traction, but he said the Blues still have a “long way to go” to start regularly attracting crowds of 25,000 or more.

He said the cost of living and the current economic climate had to be taken into account and said pricing was something they are constantly reviewing.

“That’s something we’ve got to keep working on and looking at, how do we go and get family packages together that can be more affordable?

“The game this weekend (against Moana Pasifika), we’re playing on Sunday afternoon and kids go free. I think you can get an adult’s ticket for around the $20 to $30 mark, depending on where you want to sit. A beer will cost you $11, which I think is pretty competitive.”

However, Budge said it wasn’t just about providing low budget options.

“I also look at what our customers are spending. We’ve done quite a lot of analysis around who our customers are and where they’re spending their money. And there’s a lot of them spending money on things like meal kit delivery services.

“So we know that there’s the ability to have luxury items if the customer sees value.”

Rugby’s rules often draw the ire of fans who bemoan confusing laws and the stop/start nature of some games.

The rules, as well as the Blues on field performances, are things Budge can’t control, but he said that’s no reason to give up chasing bigger crowds.

“Some of it is outside your control, but some of it is also about not hiding behind excuses and I think one of the benchmarks of the ASB Classic during that tenure was we didn’t let excuses mean we didn’t do our job.”

The Blues halfback who thought his career was over at 20

Taufa Funaki’s rugby career was almost over before it started.

Six years ago, when he was a highly-touted young halfback on the cusp of his first Super Rugby season, Funaki suffered a concussion so severe he believed it would force him from the game.

“I had a pretty bad head-knock a few years ago [2020]. It took me a long time to get back and for a while I didn’t think I was returning to rugby, but I was pretty lucky with the support I got.”

The electric halfback said he battled serious symptoms which left him unable to do basic tasks.

“They were big headaches that got to a point where I had to learn how to read and write, it got that deep. I couldn’t be in, or see light and stuff. It just really irritated me. I think overall it took about five, six months for me to get back to training. So yeah, it just showed me how important it was for me to be grateful for what I had, because just like that, it felt like everything was gone.”

Funaki just 20-years-old and not long out of Sacred Hart College when he got concussed in an NPC game for Auckland.

“Being that young, I had just debuted for Auckland, done a pre-season for the Blues, so there’s that big mental doubt because I’d never faced anything that big before, adversity in terms of my career,” he said.

“I think I grew a lot out of it. It matured me quite early and I now want to make the most of this opportunity I have to be a rugby player. There was that mental battle, but I think if anything, it made me stronger.”

However, Funaki said he is fully fit and no longer impacted.

“There’s no worrying getting into a game. I’m back and I’m ready to go.”

Funaki has long been locked in a three way fight for the Blues number nine jersey since his debut in 2021.

He has often sat on the bench as backup to Sam Nock or Finlay Christie.

Despite the competition, Finaki said the trio share a close bond.

“We’ve got a really tight group of nines. Offering advice, always finding ways to help me out, especially in my early years. We’re just there for each other whether or not we’re playing.”

Funaki has again been named on the bench for the Blues home clash against newest rivals Moana Pasifika on Sunday afternoon.

“We’ve obviously got a lot of friends in there that we’ve come up with through the grades. We know that they’re big boys and we have got to front up or they’ll punch you right in the face. They’re no easy task.”

Funaki admitted there was a unique rivalry with Moana, being the only sides that share a region in Super.

“I see some funny stuff over the media and all that, but yeah, I guess so. It’s a little bit of a rivalry.”

A proud Blues man, Funaki never envisioned himself playing for any other franchise.

“I grew up here in Auckland. So Blues and Auckland rugby player through and through. I grew up watching the likes of Joe Rocks (Rokocoko) George Moala , all guys like that who’ve just been Blues men. I found my spot here and this is something that really means a lot to me.”

However, there is interest from overseas to secure his signature.

“There has been a bit of interest elsewhere. If it was an ideal situation, I’d be in the Blues forever. But obviously other things come up and as you get older, I feel like as I’m growing up a bit, there’s a few other decisions that need to be made as well and other things taken into account. But, right now I’m a Blues player and I hold a tonne of pride putting this jersey on.”

Of Pasifika heritage, Funaki will be eligible to represent both New Zealand and Tonga.

“If it came to it. The possibility of playing for Tonga is definitely there for me. I’d be just as proud of being there and representing my family and heritage. But yeah, whether it’s a black jersey, a red jersey or a blue one, I just want to do the jersey justice wherever I get the opportunity.”

Funaki has endeared himself to fans through his love of pro wrestling, even performing a Randy Orton style celebration after scoring a try.

“I found a lot of fun in that growing up and I think now a few of us in the team, we sort of play around with that stuff, it taps into us being kids again. I managed to pull out that Randy Orton a couple years ago, but that’s just me being like the kid again, just doing rugby at its purest form and me just expressing myself.”

So, does he have more wrestling inspired celebrations up his sleeve?

“We’ll see. I just need to get over that white line first and we’ll see what comes out.”

Cricket Players Association boss Heath Mills to step down after 25 years

New Zealand Cricket Players Association chief executive Heath Mills is stepping down after more than two decades in the role.

The NZCPA said Mills had played a huge role in shaping the modern landscape for professional cricketers in New Zealand and internationally, as well as being a strong advocate for the growth and professionalisation of the women’s game.

Mills, who has led the NZCPA since 2001, will remain in the job until June.

He said the decision to step down had been a difficult one, but that the time felt right for both himself and the organisation.

“The NZCPA has been a huge part of my life for more than 25 years, and the experiences, opportunities, challenges and relationships along the way have shaped me profoundly,” Mills said.

“I’ve been incredibly fortunate that the game’s best players have trusted me to serve them in this role. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has allowed me to represent and support them, and I hope I’ve been able to contribute in a way that justifies that trust.”

A bid by a consortium of high profile cricket figures, pulled together by Mills, to launch a T20 competition became a flashpoint late last year.

It culminated in the resignation of NZ Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink days before Christmas.

The NZCPA and all six Major Associations strongly supported the bid, which is still being considered, while Weenink was accused of undermining the proposal in favour of alternative options.

Mills will continue to work closely within the global cricket landscape through his position as Executive Chairman of the World Cricketers’ Association.

He will also remain involved with the NZCPA in a project management capacity over the next 18 months, helping oversee negotiations for the next Master Agreement with New Zealand Cricket and the six Major Associations.

NZCPA chairperson Ross Verry paid tribute to Mills’ leadership and influence on the organisation and the wider game.

“Heath has been one of the most knowledgeable, progressive and influential leaders in New Zealand sport over the past two decades, and his impact has been felt across the global game,” Verry said.

“More importantly, he has always been absolutely committed to the members of the NZCPA. Heath has consistently had the players’ backs – past and present – and has represented them with loyalty, integrity and a deep sense of purpose.”

Verry said Mills had led significant innovation within the players’ association movement while navigating a constantly evolving cricket landscape.

“Under Heath’s leadership the NZCPA has become an organisation that players around the world look to as a benchmark. Initiatives like the Personal Development Programme, the Retirement Fund, the Cricketers’ Hardship Trust and the Cricket Players’ Property Trust have created opportunities and security for players long after their playing careers end.

“He has also been a passionate supporter of the women’s game and played a key role in the progress that has enabled more women to pursue cricket as a profession in New Zealand.”

The NZCPA board would begin a process to appoint Mills’ successor in the coming weeks.

Building the future of coastal shipping resilience

The Government is committed to building the resilience of New Zealand’s coastal shipping network, through six critical investments to deliver a more productive economy and ensure essential supplies can reach communities in times of crisis.

Associate Transport Minister James Meager has confirmed $400,000 towards a national digital platform to improve supply chain efficiency and coordination across ports, in partnership with PortConnect.

“Historically, the siloed nature of New Zealand’s port operations has resulted in limited ability to anticipate, respond and adapt to disruptive events. This funding will address the fragmented coordination of berthing windows and vessel visits,” Mr Meager says.

“Recent weather events have reinforced the value of clear, shared information when under pressure. Our ports are an economic lifeline to the outside world. If we are to grow productivity, we need greater resilience to external impacts on the way we trade.”

This is the final investment from the Government’s $30 million Coastal Shipping Resilience Fund, which also includes:

Container-handling equipment in Gisborne to support rapid freight movement
Modifications to the Rangitata coastal vessel to improve self-sufficiency in cargo handling
Reconstruction and return to service of the Greymouth wharf
Training berths on domestic vessels to give maritime students the sea time required to qualify as mariners
A cost-effective dredging capability, built in Northland, to support smaller regional ports

“Coastal shipping is a critical piece of our freight network, moving large and heavy cargo such as containers, cement and aggregate efficiently and safely. It is also a low-emissions mode of transport and has repeatedly proven its value following natural disasters,” Mr Meager says.

“After Cyclone Gabrielle, coastal shipping delivered essential supplies to Tairāwhiti when land routes were severely constrained. These six investments build on that experience and help ensure we are better prepared for future events in practical, tangible ways.”

Wellington Phoenix women lock in foreign attacking duo for another season

English forward Brooke Nunn and American striker Makala Woods have become the first import players to re-sign with the Wellington Phoenix in the five year history of the women’s team.

The Phoenix women are having their best season so far and currently sit fourth on the A-League ladder.

Now two of the side’s leading attacking threats have both recommitted to the club for the 2026-27 A-League season.

Nunn has already matched her four goals and three assists from her championship winning season with Central Coast Mariners in 15 matches for the Phoenix, while Woods has five assists and four goals for the club in just seven appearances since arriving in Wellington at the turn of the year as an injury replacement.

The club already has nine women’s players on its books for next season.

Phoenix head coach Bev Priestman said the club was committed to investing in players who were invested in the team and said the pair had a high ceiling.

“What we’re seeing from Brooke and Makala now is only just the start, and I think that’s what excites me the most,” Priestman said.

“We’ve also secured two big personalities, with massive hunger and desire, that are a big part of the culture of this team.

“Brooke’s unique. She has an ability to get at players one-vs-one. Her dribbling ability is exceptional and in this league that really shines through, not to mention her ability to assist with some great crosses.

“And Makala’s a dynamic forward who has many strings to her bow. She’s not just a forward that can finish, that certainly helps, but she’s quick, she’s powerful and she loves to defend too.”

Nunn, 33, said it was an easy decision to sign a new contract.

“I didn’t realise I could fall in love with a club, a country and a culture so much,” Nunn said.

“I feel like we’ve been creating so many beautiful, historic moments at the Phoenix and I want to continue contributing to being part of the success of this team and really showing the world what this club’s about.”

The Arsenal academy product said she had been able to express herself at the Phoenix and Priestman had put a lot of trust in her.

Woods, 23, said she had had developed a close connection to the Phoenix in a short period of time.

“I’ve never felt so passionate about a group of girls and an organisation,” Woods said.

“We’re achieving a lot of firsts, we’re paving the way for something really great and it’s an honour to wear the Phoenix on your chest.”

Woods’ sole focus for the remainder of the season was to win.

“I want to do something cool that’s never been done before here. I want to be a part of something that’s so special and that’s all I’m trying to do.”

Woods and Nunn will be in action for the Wellington Phoenix on Saturday evening when the women host Brisbane Roar in Wellington.

Greenpeace – Luxon’s climate policies leave Kiwis hurting as petrol hits $3 a litre

As petrol prices climb to around $3 a litre, Greenpeace is pointing to a series of Government decisions that have left Kiwis hit harder by the oil price spike.
“The Luxon Government has spent the last two years dismantling policies that were helping wean New Zealanders off expensive imported oil,” says Gen Toop, Senior Campaigner at Greenpeace Aotearoa.
“Instead of helping households escape volatile and expensive petrol prices, they have crashed the EV market, slashed public transport funding and are spending billions on new roads.
“These decisions are making the climate crisis, and the cost of living crisis worse.”
Greenpeace points to a number of decisions that it says have increased New Zealand’s dependence on imported fossil fuels including:
“This Government is effectively turning New Zealand into a dumping ground for the world’s dirtiest, most oil-hungry cars while other countries rapidly switch to EVs,” Toop says.
“At the same time they are slashing public and active transport options which forces more people into cars leaving them facing more pain at the pump when petrol prices spike.
“This latest plan to build a multi-billion dollar LNG import terminal is ludicrous. Importing and burning another volatile fossil fuel is the last thing our climate, and power bills need. Especially when we have all the wind, sun and renewable energy potential we need right here at home.”

Canberra Raiders will arrive at Mt Smart this week with an even bigger chip on their shoulders than usual.

The ‘Green Machine’ finished top of the NRL table last year, but were bundled out of the championship race with back-to-back defeats in the playoffs.

They start the new season with a renewed determination to go one better in 2026 and NZ Warriors present a stiff early challenge to those aspirations.

With this fixture, the Warriors will have played the Raiders more times than any other NRL team over their history.

Here’s what you need to know about how they shape up:

History

Over 54 previous meetings, Canberra hold a 29-25 head-to-head advantage against the Warriors.

The count is tied 5-5 over the past 10 encounters, dating back to 2021, but the Raiders have won the last three, including both meetings last season, when they finished atop the table.

On a May night when the Warriors were without both co-captains James Fisher-Harris and Mitch Barnett, Canberra prevailed 16-10 at Go Media Stadium.

The home side led 8-0 early and 10-8 with a Luke Metcalf penalty after halftime, but Raiders half Jamal Fogarty scored a try and converted for the gamewinning points in the 64th.

Before that, the Raiders accounted for the Warriors 30-8 in their Las Vegas season-opener, a result that had many picking the Warriors for the wooden spoon.

The biggest win in the rivalry came in 2000, when Canberra prevailed 56-12 at home, with Laurie Daley, Brett Mullins and Lesley Vainikolo each scoring a try double.

The Warriors’ biggest margin was their 54-12 win at Eden Park, when Shaun Johnson and Manu Vatuvei scored doubles, and Johnson was a perfect 9/9 from the tee.

Form

Both teams opened the 2026 NRL season with wins, but in very different circumstances.

The Warriors flicked the switch midway through the first half, scoring 22 straight points to grab control of their contest against Sydney Roosters at Mt Smart.

While the Roosters scored back-to-back tries in the second half and seemed to have snatched momentum back, the home side held them out for the next 20 minutes, before sealing a 42-18 victory with late tries to Chanel Harris-Tavita and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad.

Meanwhile, Canberra needed a Golden Point field goal from Ethan Sanders to overcome Manly Sea Eagles 29-28 in Sydney, after falling 14-0 in the opening 20 minutes.

With Fogarty moving on to Manly – and almost guiding his new team home over his old one – Stuart has turned to youngster Ethan Sanders as his successor and he came up trumps with his heroics last week.

“He had more pressure on him tonight than any other player on the field,” Stuart observed afterwards. “I thought his game was very mature, well beyond the amount of games he’s played.”

Sanders may be the real deal or teams may simply work out how to nullify him, as they gather more scouting footage of him. Webster and assistant Stacey Jones will have done their homework.

“He offloads the ball and carries it strong,” Webster said. “He’s a great player and we’ve definitely got to stop guys like him, but there’s a fair few of them – he’s not alone.”

Last time these teams met, Tapine was twice placed on report for dangerous tackles, but somehow avoided the sin bin or suspension. The Warriors must find a way to counter him without losing

their discipline, and the head-to-head between Tapine and James Fisher-Harris will be huge.

Kalyn Ponga switches rugby league allegiances to represent New Zealand

Newcastle Knights fullback and Queensland Origin rep Kalyn Ponga says he is “immensely proud” of his Māori heritage, as he switches rugby league allegiances from Australia to New Zealand.

The International Rugby League Board (IRL) has confirmed it has unanimously approved Ponga’s application to switch eligibility, making the 27-year-old available to play for the Kiwis at this year’s Rugby League World Cup.

It follows a change in eligibility rules making players representing New Zealand or England, who qualify for NSW or Queensland, available for State of Origin selection. A change in allegiance to New Zealand would previously have meant Ponga, who has played for Queensland 10 times, was inelligible for Origin.

In his application to the IRL, Ponga said while he was grateful for the opportunity to represent Australia at a young age, his heart was with New Zealand.

“My connection to New Zealand runs deep through every generation of my family,” he wrote.

“My father, Andre Ponga, was born in Palmerston North, and my mother, Adine Ponga, was born in Wellington. All four of my grandparents were also born in New Zealand.

“My roots, my whakapapa, and my identity are firmly grounded in this country and its people.”

Ponga said he was “immensely proud” of his Māori heritage.

“That pride has only grown stronger with each passing year. I have had the privilege of representing the Māori All Stars on three occasions, and those experiences have only deepened my connection to New Zealand rugby league and to the broader Māori community,” he wrote.

Ponga’s only appearances for Australia, he wrote, were in the Junior Kangaroos and the Rugby League World 9s, in 2019.

“These were appearances I am grateful for; however, upon reflection, they do not reflect where my heart, my heritage, and my deepest sense of belonging truly lie.”

The 2023 Dally M Medallist was born in Western Australia to New Zealand parents, spending time growing up in New Zealand before moving to Queensland.

Ponga, who is of Māori descent, has played for the New Zealand Māori but was not previously eligible to represent the Kiwis. He has never played for the Kangaroos.

In his application, Ponga said he was “committed to contributing at the highest level of the game and representing New Zealand with the saine pride, passion, and dedication I bring to every aspect of my career”.

In 2025, the IRL ruled that Gold Coast Titan AJ Brimson – who also represented Australia in the World Cup 9s in 2019 – could switch allegiances to represent England. He went on to take part in the 2025 Ashes Series against Australia.

In its ruling, the IRL Board said it felt Ponga was being “unfairly restricted” as players who had opted to represent a country at the 9s World Cup had done so based on a different set of circumstances to players who elect for a country through a 13-a-side Senior International Match (SIM).

“While SIMs are continuously played, international 9s competitions are not.”

IRL chair Troy Grant said he was “honoured” to inform Ponga of the decision to approve his application to be eligible for New Zealand.

“The strength of international rugby league is the passion of the players to represent their nations and families, and the aim of the international eligibility rules is to ensure that the best players play for nations that they are eligible to represent.”

New Zealand Rugby League GM of Football and High Performance Motu Tony said the decision reflects Ponga’s “strong desire to represent his whanau and whakapapa on the international stage”.

“Kalyn is a highly talented player and a great addition to our existing player pool, and we’re thrilled he’s chosen to align his international future with the Kiwis.”

Tony said like all players, Ponga will go through the “usual selection process”.

“But we’re excited to potentially see him in the Kiwis jersey as we build towards the World Cup.”

Ponga joins James Fisher-Harris, Leo Thompson and Dylan Brown among other high-profile Kiwis in selection consideration.

‘Rugby league has changed’

The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) announced the changes to selection rules in March, paving the way for Australian-born Kiwis to play in the series.

Players were previously required to be eligible to represent Australia or a tier two nation as defined by International Rugby League.

The updated rules removed this restriction, allowing players who who meet the traditional State of Origin criteria and represent tier one nations to be eligible.

The criteria is a player must have been born in New South Wales or Queensland, resided in New South Wales or Queensland prior to their 13th birthday, or their father played State of Origin.

At the time of the announcement, ARLC chairman Peter V’landys said the changes were a necessary and logical evolution for the game in 2026.

“Rugby league has changed, the international game has grown, and our rules need to reflect that. If a player is eligible to play State of Origin, it makes no sense to exclude them simply because they’ve represented New Zealand or England at test level.”

He said State of Origin is about where you were from and what state you were eligible for – not which country you represent internationally.

“If you’re eligible, you should be able to play for your state. Over 45 years, State of Origin has developed into something special, and we want the best players playing if they’re eligible. The commission has a responsibility to grow both the international game and State of Origin, and this change strengthens both.”

PM to visit Samoa and Tonga

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will depart for Samoa and Tonga on Sunday, reinforcing New Zealand’s commitment to two of the closest members of our Pacific family.

“Both countries are integral to who we are as a nation. With more than 300,000 Samoan and Tongan New Zealanders, the family connection is woven into the fabric of our society,” Mr Luxon says.

The visit marks New Zealand’s first comprehensive engagement with the new governments in both countries, with the Prime Minister looking forward to his meetings with the new leaders and their Cabinets in each capital.

“Through our longstanding ties, we have built enormous trust between our nations. I’m looking forward to hearing my new colleagues’ points of view, and then agreeing how we can work together to build communities that are more prosperous and safer from threats like drugs.”

The visit also represents an opportunity to celebrate the vibrancy of the connections between our countries, whether that’s sport, music or business. The Prime Minister will be joined by senior business leaders and community members, led by Savae Sir Michael Jones and Rachel Afeaki.

Further improvements to Pacific visitor visa settings

Foreign Minister Winston Peters and Immigration Minister Erica Stanford have announced further changes to visitor visa settings for Pacific people, making it more affordable for Pacific visitors to travel to New Zealand. 

“From 1 June this year, the total cost of applying for a visitor visa for Pacific nationals will drop from $216 to $161, for a 12-month period, as part of New Zealand’s ongoing work to deepen Pacific connections,” Mr Peters says.

“This is a practical update to visitor visa settings that reduces cost, supports easier travel and helps strengthen the relationships that matter most.”

“These updates build on earlier improvements, such as longer visa durations – from one year to two years with multiple entries – along with reduced processing times, new escalation processes to support urgent travel, and the current visa‑free trial for Pacific travellers coming from Australia,” Ms Stanford says.

“Together, these changes make it easier and cheaper for Pacific visitors to come to New Zealand, while ensuring the system remains clear, predictable and secure.  The Government will review the impacts in a year’s time, before deciding what happens next.”

Tall Ferns humbled by Spain in opening World Cup qualifer

Tall Ferns coach Natalie Hurst admits her side needs to handle the pressure a bit better if they’re to get some wins at their World Cup qualifying tournament.

New Zealand was beaten 99-50 by sixth-ranked Spain in their opening game in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

While New Zealand held a brief lead early in the game, Spain were up by 11 at quarter-time, 25 at half time and 41 at three-quarter time.

Spain shot 53 percent from the field, while New Zealand managed just 31, although the Kiwis did out rebound their opponents.

Ella Tofaeono top scored with 12 points, while Sharne Robati had 12 and Tegan Graham nine. Tofaeono and Rebecca Pizzey had seven rebounds each.

All 12 Tall Ferns got time on court including debutants Jade Kirisome, Emma Rogers and Briarley Rogers.

What upset Hurst was turnovers, with Spain scoring 35 of their points off New Zealand mistakes.

“Turnovers killed us from the start of the game and [is] obviously an area we want to clean up,” Hurst said afterwards.

“A different style to what we’re used to, we don’t get to play the European style a lot, Spain are obviously a good team, super athletic and we struggled with that.

“We need to handle the pressure that other teams are going to apply to us.”

Before the tournament the Tall Ferns had targeted other games in their group for wins, knowing that Spain and the United States are world powers in the sport.

“A good first hit out for us, positives for us we win the rebound count, we hung together as a team for 40 minutes and so we have to learn quickly and move on quickly as well,” Hurst said.

New Zealand’s next game is against Italy on Friday. They also play defending world champions the USA, Puerto Rico and Senegal.

The top three teams (excluding the USA who have already qualified) from this six-team tournament will earn spots at the World Cup in Germany in September.

Cricket: Fomer White Ferns captain Sophie Devine goes for top-dollar in The Hundred auction

White Fern Sophie Devine has picked up a $476,000 deal to play for the Welsh Fire in this year’s The Hundred in the UK.

It is the highest price for a women’s player in the history of the competition.

Devine, 36, who recently relinquished the New Zealand captaincy has played in the UK since 2016 and last season played for the Birmingham Phoenix.

Australian Beth Mooney was picked for the same top price by the Trent Rockets.

Their salaries are significantly higher than the previous top wage in the women’s Hundred ($147,000). They are also higher than the highest salaries in the Women’s Big Bash League, and are comparable to the wages on offer at the WPL.

The salary cap in the women’s Hundred has doubled to $2 million per team this year as a direct result of the new private investment in the Hundred, which has seen external investors become owners or co-owners of all eight franchises.

Amelia Kerr was not in the auction as she was pre-signed by the Mumbai Indians London.

The Hundred, matches of which consist of 100 deliveries for each team, starts in July.

Tokyo Gas and Hanwa are buyers of wood pellets produced by PT Biomasa Jaya Abadi (PT BJA), which operates in Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo Province. Tony Rianto, Head of the Sub-Directorate for Forest Product Certification and Marketing, explained that Indonesias forest governance system is guided by four key pillars: sustainable forest management that balances ecological, social, and economic functions; transparency and accountability; regulatory compliance; and respect for indigenous peoples and local communities.

Central to this framework is Indonesias Timber Legality and Sustainability Verification System (SVLK), a national assurance system ensuring that forest products originate from legal and sustainably managed sources. The system covers the entire supply chain—from harvesting and transportation to processing and export—and is implemented through independent verification bodies accredited to audit forest operators, industries, and exporters.

Furthermore, Indonesia continues to enhance the system in line with evolving global market expectations, including the development of geolocation-based monitoring at harvesting sites and the digitalization of transport and export documentation.

These measures are designed to strengthen traceability and support compliance with emerging international due diligence requirements, such as the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

During the meeting, discussions also covered Indonesias forest utilization planning framework, including the Annual Work Plan (RKT), which regulates harvesting activities under approved long-term forest management plans and incorporates biodiversity safeguards and conservation measures.

The Ministry reaffirmed that forest utilization activities are subject to rigorous regulatory oversight and monitoring mechanisms to ensure compliance with environmental safeguards and sustainable forest management practices.

The meeting followed an earlier discussion between Tokyo Gas and Hanwa and the Pohuwato Regency Government on Monday (March 2). Regent Syaiful A.

Mbuinga confirmed that PT BJA has fulfilled all licensing requirements, operates legally, and contributes to the local economy by employing more than 1,500 workers.

Investment in Pohuwato, including from PT BJA, has contributed to regional economic growth of around 9%, with the local government maintaining strict oversight of investment activities in the region.
