Man arrested over Whangārei firearms incident

A man will face court today following a firearms incident at a Morningside property last week.

Whangārei CIB have been investigating the isolated incident which allegedly occurred on 3 March.

Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer says the following day, it was reported to Police a firearm had been allegedly discharged at the property.

“Enquiries were carried out, which resulted in the search of a motor vehicle and the recovery of the firearm used,” he says.

“Police also established a woman presented at hospital with a serious injury to her foot, which required surgery.”

Over the past week, enquiries have been ongoing to locate the alleged offender.

Detective Senior Sergeant Pilmer says Police checked a Raumanga address on Wednesday afternoon.

“Our staff were supported by the Offender Prevention Team (OPT) and located a person of interest.”

The 30-year-old man was arrested and has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm and driving while disqualified.

He will appear in the Whangārei District Court today.

“It’s a great outcome for the community that the man is now in custody and the firearm is also out of circulation,” Detective Senior Sergeant Pilmer says.

A second man, aged 35, is also before the Whangārei District Court after allegedly being found in possession of a firearm and being an accessory after the fact.

The man was arrested on Thursday as part of enquiries into the original incident in Morningside.

Economy – RBNZ working with industry to improve access to basic transaction services

12 March 2026 – Last year the Council of Financial Regulators (CoFR) consulted the public on whether New Zealanders should have the right to access a basic transaction account if they want one.

50 submissions were received and 22 community groups, financial institutions, fintechs, and support services were directly engaged, with 98% of submitters stating that action is needed to improve access to transaction accounts.

Acting Assistant Governor Financial Stability, Angus McGregor, says that the consultation clearly highlighted the challenges some groups face in accessing the basic banking services necessary to meet their everyday financial needs.

“This consultation process has allowed us to gather a wide range of perspectives, take on board industry feedback, and find pragmatic solutions.” Mr McGregor says.

“We received constructive input from the banking sector, and a willingness to work with us to solve this issue through a collaborative approach.”

The RBNZ is developing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support this approach to addressing financial exclusion.

Under the MoU, participating financial entities will commit to provide access to all New Zealand consumers unless they have a compelling reason for declining to provide a basic transaction product. Public sector agencies will commit to clarifying regulatory requirements, co-ordinating efforts, and highlighting best practices that can be adopted to support financial inclusion.

The MoU will provide flexibility for participating entities to develop their own solutions to promote inclusion, while ensuring progress can be monitored through regular reporting.
This work aims to bring financial inclusion in New Zealand in line with other developed countries such as Canada, the UK, France, Denmark and Sweden.

The RBNZ will be leading co-ordination of the MoU, with support from the Financial Markets Authority, the Banking Ombudsmen, the Retirement Commission, the Department of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and the Department of Corrections.

“This work directly supports our statutory purpose of enabling economic wellbeing and prosperity for all New Zealanders, and aligns with recommendations in the Commerce Commission’s Market Study into Personal Banking Services.” Mr McGregor says.

It is anticipated that the MoU will come into effect later this year.

PM to visit Samoa and Tonga

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will depart for Samoa and Tonga on Sunday, reinforcing New Zealand’s commitment to two of the closest members of our Pacific family.

“Both countries are integral to who we are as a nation. With more than 300,000 Samoan and Tongan New Zealanders, the family connection is woven into the fabric of our society,” Mr Luxon says.

The visit marks New Zealand’s first comprehensive engagement with the new governments in both countries, with the Prime Minister looking forward to his meetings with the new leaders and their Cabinets in each capital.

“Through our longstanding ties, we have built enormous trust between our nations. I’m looking forward to hearing my new colleagues’ points of view, and then agreeing how we can work together to build communities that are more prosperous and safer from threats like drugs.”

The visit also represents an opportunity to celebrate the vibrancy of the connections between our countries, whether that’s sport, music or business. The Prime Minister will be joined by senior business leaders and community members, led by Savae Sir Michael Jones and Rachel Afeaki.

The Prime Minister will also be joined by Minister for Pacific Peoples Dr Shane Reti, Police Minister Mark Mitchell (in Samoa), Tim van de Molen MP, Jenny Salesa MP and Teanau Tuiono MP.  

The delegation departs Auckland on Sunday 15 March and returns on Wednesday 18 March.

Police presence in Rotorua and Ōpōtiki for gang tangi

Police will have a visible presence across Rotorua tomorrow and Saturday as a gang tangi travels from Rotorua to Ōpōtiki.

A large number of gang members and associates are expected to be in town for the tangi from many parts of the country.

Police will have additional resources available to provide support to staff and to provide a respectful and safe space for whānau and friends to grieve peacefully.

Police have conveyed our lawful expectations to local gang leaders, including around the wearing or displaying of gang insignia in a public place, which Police will act upon.

Our focus is on the safety of everyone. We will not tolerate behaviour that aims to threaten or intimidate, and officers will be working to reduce disruption to the public.

Police will have additional patrols in place Friday and Saturday, and will follow up on reports of illegal activity.

We urge anyone who is witnessing illegal behaviour to call 111 immediately. Other reports can be made via 105.

Police acknowledge IPCA report into justified use of force, Tairāwhiti

Police acknowledge and accept an Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) report that found officers were justified in using force when taking a man into custody in Tairāwhiti.

On 14 December 2024, Police received reports of a man (referred to in the IPCA report as Mr Z) in a stolen ute in Tiniroto. He was believed to be in possession of a firearm.

Police saw the vehicle earlier in the day and the vehicle was signalled to stop, however, Mr Z fled driving in a dangerous manner and a pursuit was abandoned.

Mr Z was later located in the ute parked on the side of the road in Tiniroto.

While being told he was under arrest, Mr Z resisted and was seen to reach over the centre console and into the passenger footwell while kicking out towards the officers.

Officers believed Mr Z was reaching for a firearm, resulting in officers to act and use tasers, the deployment of a Police dog, and strikes and punches to apprehend Mr Z.

After a search of the vehicle, no firearm was located.

An IPCA investigation found the officers were justified in the use of force to take Mr Z into custody, and that overall Police’s actions were considered reasonable and proportionate in the circumstances.

Eastern District Commander Superintendent Joel Lamb acknowledges the report’s findings released today.

“I am proud of our Police Officers for their actions that day, they believed the man posed an imminent threat to them, their fellow officers, and members of the public.

“They took the appropriate steps to control the rapidly evolving situation and made split-second decisions that ensured the safety of everyone within the community.”

Mr Z made a full recovery from the injuries sustained during his arrest.

Arrests after attempted robbery

A group fleeing the scene of an attempted robbery at a central Auckland superette have also failed to give Police the slip.

Just before 9pm, two males covering their faces with balaclavas entered the store on Karangahape Road.

“These offenders entered the store, verbally abusing the shopkeeper,” Auckland Central Area Commander, Inspector Grae Anderson says.

“One of these males has jumped onto the counter, resulting in both offenders being chased out of the store by the shopkeeper.”

Both males ran to a waiting stolen vehicle which fled from the area.

Police units were dispatched to the incident.

“This vehicle was later detected in the Western Springs area, with a Police camera operator tracking its movements until the Police Eagle helicopter got overhead,” Inspector Anderson says.

The vehicle was seen stopping near St Lukes, with two males exiting before it drove off again.

“The two 17-year-olds were soon located by Police units and arrested, one of which was carrying a machete,” Inspector Anderson says.

Meanwhile, Eagle continued to track the stolen vehicle heading west on the northwestern motorway (SH16).

Inspector Anderson says the vehicle was stopped by Police on Te Atatū Road a short time later and two males, aged 12 and 13, were taken into custody without further incident.

Following further enquiries by Police, the two males have been referred to Youth Aid.

The two 17-year-olds arrested in St Lukes have been jointly charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

One of the pair has been charged with possessing an offensive weapon. They will appear in the Auckland Youth Court today.

“I would like to acknowledge all the Police staff involved in responding to last night’s incident, resulting in these apprehensions,” Inspector Anderson says.

Sudden death, Tāmaki River

Police have recovered a man’s body from the Tāmaki River in east Auckland.

Search efforts have been underway through the week after the man was reported missing near Waipuna on 6 March.

Police responded to the area just before 6pm last night, 11 March, after a member of the public had located the man in water.

Inspector Jim Wilson, Auckland City East Area Commander, says the man’s death will be referred to the Coroner.

“Searching has been underway involving the Police Maritime Unit and the Police National Dive Squad, with assistance from the Navy,” he says.

“I would like to acknowledge all of those experts involved in the search effort.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family for their loss.”

Hawke’s Bay human trafficker Joseph Matamata loses sentence bid

New Zealand’s most notorious slavedriver and trafficker has failed in a bid to have his sentence shortened.

Joseph Matamata was jailed for 11 years in 2020 for using 13 people as slaves and 10 charges of human trafficking.

But the Court of Appeal has set aside two of the trafficking convictions, because the attorney general had not given delegation for a decision on those charges being brought.

The court had previously ruled the 11 year term imposed by Justice Helen Cull was ‘lenient in the circumstances’, and declined to cut it down further.

“We are satisfied that the outcome of the recall application should not impact Mr Matamata’s sentence,” said the Court of Appeal judges in yesterday’s decision.

“The number of convictions was a very minor consideration in setting the starting point and was just one of many considerations. Cull J also considered the extent of the emotional and financial harm caused to the victims, the abuse of Mr Matamata’s position of trust and authority in relation to the victims, the number of victims (which remains unchanged), the vulnerability of the victims and the high level of premeditation”

Matamata has served his minimum term of imprisonment of five years. The parole board twice refused him parole last year and he is due to reappear before the panel in June.

The 71-year-old brought people from Samoa to New Zealand to supply labour to orchards in Hawke’s Bay over 25 years from 1994 to 2019, promising them a better life.

But he kept their wages, restricted their movements and communications, and used threats or violence to control them.

They worked up to 14 hours a day in the fields, seven days a week, completing chores at Matamata’s home late into the evening and beaten up if they broke rules, including speaking to their families in Samoa or leaving his Hastings home without permission.

The oldest victim was in his 50s and the youngest was just 12. The boy described being beaten, stabbed and fed stale food.

“When the bamboo stick breaks, then it’s the belt,” he told police. “When he gets a sore hand from the belt, from holding the belt, then that’s when the stick comes.”

Matamata denied a nine-foot fence around his property was to lock his slaves in. Immigration New Zealand “conservatively estimated” he kept more than $400,000 in wages they had earned.

He used three-month holiday visas to recruit new workers, and adopted three young people in 2016.

A 15-year-old girl, who thought she had come to New Zealand for schooling, told the jury she was instead made to look after Matamata’s children, cook and clean. She said she ran away to Auckland but Matamata caught up with her and tied her up in his car for the journey back, when she was placed in a storeroom for the night.

Police investigating threat made towards Timaru school

Police say there is no information to suggest a threat made towards a Timaru school was credible.

Police were alerted to the message about 7.45pm on Tuesday.

“We will not detail the specifics of the threat, however, investigators are actively pursuing positive lines of enquiry to identify the person responsible for sending the message,” Aoraki Area Commander Inspector Vicki Walker said.

“Officers are providing reassurance patrols in the area, and we are working closely with the school as the investigation progresses.”

Police are unable to comment further.

One person dies from e-scooter crash injuries

A person has died in hospital after crashing off an e-scooter in the town of Twizel late last month.

Police said the e-scooter crash happened on 28 February.

No other vehicle was involved in the incident.

Police said the person passed away in hospital yesterday from their injuries.

The death has been referred to the coroner.

Appeal for information: Fatal crash, SH5, Taupō

Police are appealing for witnesses and information following a fatal crash on State Highway 5, Taupō, on Monday.

On Monday 9 March, around 2.10am, Police were called to the single vehicle crash where sadly one person was located deceased.

The Serious Crash Unit conducted a scene examination and enquiries into the circumstances of the crash remain on going.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the crash or the manner of driving of a Green Land Rover Discovery towing a trailer with two motorcycles.

Alternatively, if you have dashcam footage from the State Highway 5, Taupō, or surrounding areas, in the late hours of Sunday 8 March to the early hours of Monday morning, please get in touch.

Missing man located, Horeke

A 64-year-old man who went missing in the Far North last night has been located safe and well after spending a night in the bush.

Police received a report at around 8.45pm that a man had become separated from his group during a walk near Horeke.

Detective Inspector Geoff McCarthy, of Northland Police, says the man did not have a phone on him and the weather was deteriorating.

“Police and Land Search and Rescue activated at 10pm and searched large areas of bush through the night.”

With no sign of the man by daybreak, the Horeke community rallied together to help find him.

“This morning, Police and LandSAR received extensive assistance from the community and the man’s whānau.”

“The man was located safe and sound at around 9.30am, and was able to walk out of the bush,” Detective Inspector McCarthy says

Police appreciate the support received from the local community.

“Police would like to thank the Horeke community for their help in locating him.”

Vehicle seized after anti-social road user activity in Porirua cemetery

On Monday 9 March at about 7.30pm, Police received multiple reports from members of the public of a blue Ford Falcon car speeding within the grounds of the Whenua Tapu Cemetery in Porirua.
Inspector Renee Perkins, Area Commander Kapiti-Mana, says “It is alleged the driver of the Ford vehicle, drove recklessly in the grounds of the cemetery for about 15 minutes, along with other vehicles. It’s lucky no one was hurt due to this dangerous behaviour.”

“Thanks to information provided by the public, and through our initial enquiries, we were able to seize one of the vehicles and we continue our search for the other vehicles and their drivers. This real time information is crucial in helping us know where to be and assists in our investigations, allowing us to take action like seizing vehicles and holding those responsible to account.

“Not only is this a dangerous activity within a cemetery, but it is also incredibly disrespectful for a place where people go to grieve and remember their loved ones who have passed.”

Anita Baker Mayor of Porirua says “This type of dangerous behaviour will not be tolerated. It costs money to fix damage left by unruly drivers. We are grateful to members of the public who contacted Police at the time the incident was taking place.”

New Solicitor-General appointed

Anna Adams has been appointed Solicitor-General and Chief Executive of the Crown Law Office, Attorney-General Judith Collins announced today.

“Ms Adams is an outstanding lawyer and leader,” Ms Collins says.

“She has extensive experience in public law and has worked for many years at the highest levels of our legal system.

“Ms Adams also brings strong private‑sector leadership, having chaired a major national law firm. That mix of legal expertise and practical leadership makes her exceptionally well suited to the role of Solicitor-General.

“She is widely respected for her judgement, integrity and commitment to the law. I am confident she will provide strong and effective leadership at Crown Law and continue the high standards expected of the Solicitor-General.”

The Solicitor-General is a key constitutional role, serving as the Crown’s principal legal adviser, providing advice to the Prime Minister, the Attorney-General and Cabinet, and leads the Crown Law Office. The Solicitor-General is appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of, the Governor-General.

Ms Adams is an expert in public law with 28 years of experience across advisory work and litigation. She has acted in criminal prosecutions and civil cases for both public and private sector clients and has appeared as lead counsel in more than 100 cases in the District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal, including complex coronial inquests and major inquiries.

Ms Adams is currently a barrister at Bankside Chambers. She previously spent 20 years at Meredith Connell, serving as lead partner for public and health law and later as Chair of the Board. She also holds governance roles, including on the board of PHARMAC.

Ms Adams holds an LLM from Yale Law School, an LLB (Hons) and a BA from the University of Auckland. She has been appointed for five years from 11 May 2026.

Fatal crash: Forrest Hill

One person has died following a serious crash on William Souter Street, Forrest Hill this morning.

Police were called at around 8.55am to reports of a single-vehicle crash.

A car has mounted the curb and hit two people before impacting a building.

One person was transported to hospital in a critical condition, and they have sadly now died from their injuries.

Two people sustained moderate injuries. One was transported to hospital and the other was treated at the scene.

The Serious Crash Unit is in attendance.

Enquiries into the crash are ongoing.

Appeal for information following serious assault, Mahia

Attribute to Detective Sergeant Joshua Jones – Wairoa CIB: 

Police are appealing for information following a serious assault at an address in Mahia at the end of February.

On Saturday 28 February, around 11.30pm, Police were called with a report that a man had entered an address uninvited, on Newcastle Street, and seriously assaulted one of the occupants.

The man was confronted by another occupant of the address, who has hit the man over the head with a golf club causing injury to his head and face – as a result he has fled from the property on a side-by-side quadbike, down Newcastle Street and onto Weld Street.

This is a very serious incident that has happened in a place where the victim should have been able to feel safe. The victim sustained serious injuries, and both occupants are understandably very shaken by the incident.

Police have conducted initial enquiries, but have been unable to identify the man, and are now seeking the public’s assistance.

The man is described to be in his 30s or 40s around 6’1”-6’3”/185.4cm-190.5cm in height, and of chubby build. He was reported to be wearing a white singlet and jeans. He has very short, black, hair and a receding hair line.

Police are asking for anyone that has seen a man matching this description, or who had unexplained head injuries from the weekend of Saturday 28 February, to please get in touch.

Additionally, we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed a dark coloured quad bike in the Newcastle Street and Weld Street areas, between 11pm and midnight on that Saturday night, or who has CCTV or dashcam footage of the area.

Cut it out: recidivist burglar caught by Police

Matamata Police have arrested a recidivist burglar after an electronic tracking tag alerted officers to the location of a stolen lawnmower.

A local officer took the report of the burglary on Monday morning, with the victim stating that the $1,200 brand new lawnmower had an electronic tracking tag attached for security.

Police quickly went to a private address where the tracking tag had been shown pinging, locating and recovering the lawnmower to much delight of the victim.

A 36-year-old man was arrested on a charge of receiving property over $1,000 and has been remanded in custody. They will appear for a second time in the Hamilton District Court on 24 March.

“This is a great outcome for all, being able to quickly recover a stolen item and catching a recidivist burglar red-handed,” said Senior Sergeant Aaron Fraser, Waikato East Response Manager.

“Police encourage you to keep valuable belongings out of sight and secured, note down serial numbers of tools or notable appliances, and engrave belongings if you can.

“In this case, adding an additional element of security like an electronic tracking tag came up trumps for the victim and greatly aided officers in locating the stolen item,” said Senior Sergeant Fraser.

Arrests made, drugs and firearms seized, Canterbury

Police have arrested two men and seized amounts cash, methamphetamine, firearms, and ammunition, in Canterbury.

Over the past two weeks, Police executed search warrants at various properties linked to Mongrel Mob gang members, in Christchurch and North Canterbury.

During these searches, Police located and seized several thousand dollars in cash, methamphetamine, several firearms, and ammunition.

Police also discovered a “chop shop” and have been able to recover several stolen vehicles. A further five vehicles were seized by the courts due to unpaid fines.

As a result, two men, who are both patched Mongrel Mob members, were arrested.

They are remanded in custody, due to reappear in the Christchurch District Court in the coming weeks.

A 34-year-old is due to appear on 25 March and a 29-year-old is due to appear on 1 April. Both are facing charges relating to driving matters, possession of methamphetamine for supply, possession of cannabis, and unlawful possession if ammunition.

Police are not ruling out further charges.
