American microbiologist behind global water safety breakthrough wins 2026 Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize

Source: Media Outreach

  • Professor Joan Bray Rose recognised for pioneering Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) as a global approach for assessing pathogen risks in water
  • QMRA adopted into global drinking water standards and enabled safe water reuse, benefitting millions worldwide

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach Newswire – 16 April 2026 – Professor Joan Bray Rose has been awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2026 for her work as a key pioneer in the development and global adoption of Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA), a science-based approach to safeguard the quality of drinking water, as well as water reuse systems. Her work has transformed the science of microbial risk management and guided policies that protect public health and ensure safe water for communities worldwide. Her expertise in the domain of water quality and health has also played a key role in strengthening Singapore’s used water management, and the introduction of NEWater, Singapore’s third National Tap.

Professor Joan Bray Rose, Homer Nowlin Chair in Water Research and Director of the Water Alliance at Michigan State University and Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2026 Laureate

2. Commenting on her accolade, Professor Rose, 11th recipient of the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize said, “I am deeply honoured to receive this esteemed award. This recognition reflects our collective progress in advancing microbial risk science and its role in protecting public health today. Safe water is one of the world’s most fundamental yet unevenly distributed resource critical to sustaining human life. As microbial risks continue to evolve, strengthening the robustness of our water systems remains an ongoing endeavour to ensure they remain dependable and resilient; safeguarding both water quality and people’s lives.” She is currently the Homer Nowlin Chair in Water Research, Director of the Water Alliance at Michigan State University.

Uncovering invisible risks to revolutionise water safety

3. In the late 1980s and 1990s, Professor Rose led a team to investigate a series of waterborne disease outbreaks across the United States. Among the most severe was the 1993 Cryptosporidiosis outbreak in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where an estimated 403,000 residents fell ill and at least 69 deaths were recorded[1]. She was the first to demonstrate the widespread occurrence of Cryptosporidium as a zoonotic pathogen[2] in the United States, and its transmission to humans through inadequately filtered and disinfected drinking water supplies. By establishing Cryptosporidium as the causative agent of these outbreaks, she highlighted the vulnerability of drinking water systems to microbial contamination – a challenge with global public health implications. Her findings also revealed a critical gap: pathogens could evade conventional water treatment, existing monitoring systems detected microbes without quantifying risk, and public health responses were largely reactive rather than predictive.

4. Professor Rose then pioneered QMRA in the 1990s and early 2000s to address these critical gaps undermining water safety and public health. QMRA introduced a systematic, science-based approach to assess and manage microbial risks in drinking and other forms of water, including reuse water. By enabling scientists to quantify infection risks and illness probabilities based on pathogen concentrations, exposure pathways and consumption patterns, QMRA shifted water management from reactive “detect and correct” approaches to proactive “predict and prevent” strategies. This revolutionised water safety, boosting the quality of water systems to reliably meet health standards.

Global impact on water microbiology and water quality

5. QMRA is now widely adopted in drinking water regulations worldwide including the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Standards and the World Health Organisation’s Third Edition of the Drinking Water Quality Guidelines in 2004. Her work has enabled water utilities and regulators to define treatment requirements based on tolerable health risks for any given water source.

6. Professor Rose extended the application of QMRA beyond drinking water to assess microbial risks in treated wastewater and water reuse systems. This development greatly strengthened global confidence in leveraging recycled water as a viable and sustainable supply source, and Professor Rose has since strongly advocated for the adoption of water reuse to address global water scarcity. She also advised the Orange County Water District’s Independent Advisory Panel and the California State Water Resources Control Board’s Expert Panel on water reuse. Her guidance contributed to California’s Indirect and Direct Potable Reuse regulations, now models for water reuse standards worldwide, including in Australia, Spain, and the United States.

7. For over two decades, Professor Rose worked closely with PUB, Singapore’s National Water Agency, to strengthen water quality and safety. She was instrumental in the advancement of NEWater which was introduced in 2003, serving on the NEWater Expert Panel from 1998 to 2002. In her role, Professor Rose shared her expertise, provided guidance on best practices for water quality monitoring, and reviewed findings from health studies which demonstrated the long-term safety of NEWater. From 2003 to 2019, she also chaired PUB’s External Audit Panel, supporting the safe and robust implementation of water reuse in Singapore. In recognition of her significant contributions, she was conferred the Honorary Citizen Award by the Government of Singapore in 2015. Tapping on the QMRA approach, PUB has since strengthened the capabilities to use water quality surveillance data to guide treatment processes and ensure compliance with local and international drinking water standards and guidelines. (Refer to Annex on how QMRA is applied in Singapore.)

8. Beyond research, she has advanced global knowledge and capacity in microbial risk assessment through training and collaborative initiatives such as launching the QMRA Summer Institute[3] and QMRAwiki[4]. She has also strengthened preparedness for waterborne disease outbreaks worldwide by spearheading major international initiatives such as the Global Water Pathogen Project[5] and Wastewater Sphere[6].

Recognising a steadfast champion of global public health

9. Professor Rose, who recently turned 72, has dedicated her professional life to improving water quality and safeguarding public health outcomes. She is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading authorities in water microbiology and received the 2024 International Water Association Global Water Award for her contributions. Today, she continues to lead research on emerging microbial health risks, driven by a deep and enduring commitment to improving lives worldwide. Her work remains critical as cities strengthen their water resilience against evolving public health and climate challenges.

10. Professor Rose will receive the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize – an award certificate, a gold medallion, and S$300,000, presented in partnership with Temasek Foundation – at an award ceremony on 16 June 2026, held during the official opening of the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) 2026. She will also deliver a keynote lecture the same day. SIWW2026 is expected to gather 2,500 leaders, experts and practitioners from governments, cities, utilities, and industry, and over 25,000 trade visitors.

[3] Launched in 2006, The QMRA Summer Institute has trained over 400 professionals worldwide in pathogen risk assessment across water, food, and environmental contexts, with extended collaborations in Singapore, Japan, India, China, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and parts of Europe.
[4] QMRAwiki is the first comprehensive database of microbial dose-response relationships, which has been instrumental in advancing disease transmission modelling and risk characterisation.
[5] The Global Water Pathogen Project (GWPP) is funded by Dow, Dow-Corning and GATES Foundations, in partnership with UNESCO. GWPP creates a comprehensive knowledge hub on water pathogens, aiming to improve global water safety and sanitation.

[6] A sub-portal of GWPP to advance environmental surveillance of sewage for SARS-CoV-2 and support public health measures. W-Sphere aggregated data from over 2,600 cities, counties and regional systems globally.

Application of QMRA in Singapore’s context

Leveraging on the concepts embedded in QMRA, PUB has established robust treatment processes and a comprehensive water quality surveillance programme to ensure that Singapore’s drinking water consistently meets both local drinking water regulations, as well as international drinking water standards and guidelines. Today, the approach has evolved from a reactive “end-of-pipe testing” to a “process monitoring” approach, one that is more proactive in identifying potential risks within the treatment process.

QMRA also enables PUB to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of different treatment technologies in managing microbial risks. This allows for informed, evidence-based decisions when selecting suitable technology for Singapore’s water sources, further strengthening the safety and reliability of our water supply. For instance, Singapore has adopted new and advanced technologies for water treatment, such as:

(i) reverse osmosis for removal of dissolved ions and particles, including viruses, which are too small to be removed through normal filtration; and

(ii) ultraviolet disinfection and ozonation for disinfection of a broader range of waterborne pathogens.

XEV Will Launches A New “Hardware + Service” EV Model in Europe, Cutting Entry Costs and Expanding Access to Battery Swapping

Source: Media Outreach

TURIN, ITALY – Media OutReach Newswire – 11 April 2026 – XEV today announced the European rollout of its new Customer-to-Manufacturer (C2M) ecosystem, a direct-order model designed to lower the cost of entering the electric vehicle market by separating vehicle ownership from battery service. Through the program, customers can purchase an XEV vehicle while leasing its battery capacity, reducing upfront costs and addressing two of the biggest barriers to EV adoption in Europe: high purchase prices and concerns over battery depreciation and residual value. XEV is currently in discussions with capable partners, and many well-known large enterprises are hoping to get an early foothold in the new energy industry. This move will allow them to quickly enter the new energy sector.”

XEV Will Launches A New “Hardware + Service” EV Model in Europe, Cutting Entry Costs and Expanding Access to Battery Swapping

The launch marks a major shift from the traditional dealership model, which relies on costly inventory and standardized vehicle stock. With XEV’s C2M approach, drivers can configure vehicles directly online, enabling personalized production while reducing the capital burden typically built into retail pricing.

“We are not just manufacturing cars. We are redefining vehicle ownership,” says the XEV leadership team. “Our goal is to make car production as flexible as smartphone manufacturing. We give users exactly what they need for city living without the financial weight of traditional ownership.”

Built for European cities, customized by users

XEV’s vehicles are designed specifically for dense urban environments. With a compact footprint of approximately 2.5 meters, the YOYO is built to navigate narrow streets and congested city centers while still offering a high degree of personalization.

Through XEV’s online platform, customers can configure their vehicles by selecting exterior colors, interior materials, wheel designs, and other features. These choices feed into XEV’s flexible production model, which supports mass customization rather than one-size-fits-all inventory.

3 Minutes to Full Power: Solving the Charging Crisis

Range anxiety remains a critical hurdle for European EVs. This is particularly true for drivers without private home charging infrastructure. XEV addresses this with its proprietary battery swapping network.

The XEV YOYO and the upcoming XEV XPRESSION are engineered with a modular battery system. Instead of waiting hours at a charging point, drivers pull into a dedicated station. They complete a fully automated battery replacement in approximately three minutes.

This “SWAPPING” technology does more than save time. It improves operational efficiency for commercial users and ensures the vehicle is immune to battery degradation. Since the driver does not own the battery, they never have to worry about the cell’s lifespan affecting the car’s resale value. This creates a “Zero Usage Anxiety” experience for the owner.

Commercial Application: Powering the Last-Mile Economy

The flexibility of the XEV platform extends well beyond personal commuting. It is designed to serve the booming last-mile economy. The platform supports last-mile delivery vehicles and shared mobility fleets.

XEV provides specialized enclosed cargo options for logistics companies. The vehicle can even be customized for small business applications, such as mobile coffee carts or retail trucks. For small business owners, the vehicle serves as a mobile asset that can be configured for specific trades, effectively lowering the barrier to entry for entrepreneurs.

XEV has already initiated pilot projects with major European logistics firms to prove the model’s viability for high-frequency urban commuting and commercial delivery. For car-sharing services, the high utilization rates and low maintenance needs of the YOYO make it an ideal asset for time-based rental fleets. The modular design further supports this eco-friendly lifecycle by facilitating easy repair and part upgrades. This extends the product lifespan and reduces waste compared to traditional vehicles that are often scrapped when a single major system fails.

A Strategic Supply Chain for a New Era

XEV achieves this level of flexibility through a strategic manufacturing model. The company adopts a capital-light approach that relies on deep collaboration with mature Asian automotive supply chains. This ensures rigorous quality control and cost efficiency without the bloating of traditional manufacturing.

Simultaneously, XEV is committed to European localization. The company is currently establishing assembly hubs and battery swapping networks across Europe to better serve local demand. This dual approach allows XEV to combine global manufacturing power with local market responsiveness. It ensures that while the technology is global, the support and infrastructure are local.

Availability

Sales and deliveries of the XEV YOYO have commenced in whole European markets, including major countries of Italy and Germany, Spain and France and Argentina of South America, Peru of Africa etc.. The company continues to expand its infrastructure to support the growing network of users who demand a smarter and cleaner way to move through their cities.

NGOs – As Pacific nations queue for petrol, ministers gather to chart a fossil-fuel-free future

Source: Fossil Fuel Treaty

APRIL 8, 2025 – As Pacific nations scramble to secure fuel supplies amid the Iran war – with Fiji hiking petrol prices by 20%, Tuvalu sending government workers home and the Marshall Islands declaring a 90-day economic emergency — ministers from across the region are convening in Vanuatu to do something about the fossil fuel dependency at the heart of the crisis.

Ministers and senior officials from Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) will convene in Port Vila, Vanuatu from April 13–15 for the third Pacific Ministerial Dialogue on the Global Just Transition – a landmark gathering that will shape the Pacific’s unified position ahead of the world’s first international conference dedicated to phasing out fossil fuels.

This engagement began in Port Vila in March 2023, following two devastating Category-4 cyclones in Vanuatu. There, PSIDS articulated a collective vision for a Fossil Fuel-Free Pacific and elevated the global call for a managed phase-out of fossil fuels. PSIDS are now returning to Port Vila for this preparatory summit, Port Vila II, ahead of the First International Conference on Transitioning Away From Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta, Colombia later this month – a historic milestone they were central in bringing about, and will be crucial in taking forward.

Port Vila II aims to consolidate a unified Pacific stance on fossil fuel phase-out, build momentum for full region-wide support of the Fossil Fuel Treaty proposal and establish a PSIDS Inter-Governmental Taskforce to lead regional engagement in the coming negotiation phase.

Hon. Ralph Regenvanu, Minister for Climate Change Adaptation, Government of Vanuatu said “The Pacific did not create the fossil fuel crisis, yet we are paying the highest price for it. Our communities are on the frontlines of sea level rise, intensifying cyclones, and the slow erasure of the only homes we have ever known. Port Vila II is about ensuring our voice doesn’t just get heard at Santa Marta—it must shape what happens there. It serves as a powerful reminder of what we have achieved and what we can achieve when we stand up for the survival of our people.”

The Santa Marta Conference represents a defining moment in global climate diplomacy — and one that Australia, as a major fossil fuel exporter and a near neighbour to the Pacific, cannot afford to sit out. While Pacific nations have led efforts to build a multilateral framework for a managed global transition away from fossil fuels, Australia has continued to approve new coal and gas projects; a contradiction that Pacific leaders say is incompatible with the commitments of a genuine partner.

Joseph Sikulu, Pacific Champion for the Fossil Fuel Treaty said “For Pacific Islands, leading on Climate has never been a choice; it has been a matter of survival for us. We are constantly at the forefront pushing for ambition and testing the limits of multilateralism. We were the first to call for a fossil fuel treaty, knowing we need to try everything we can to bring about the transformation we need. Our hope is that we are joined by partners who are ready to take accountability for their actions and help us accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels. The Santa Marta Conference is an opportunity for Australia, our big brother nation in the Pacific, to show up for the future of the region and to show us they are ready to lead on climate alongside us.”

With Australia to be president of negotiations at COP31 in 2026, the Santa Marta Conference represents an important moment for the region — and an opportunity for Australia to demonstrate genuine partnership with its Pacific neighbours on the defining issue of our time.

Dr. Tzeporah Berman, Founder and Chair, Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative said “Pacific Island Nations were the first countries to call for a Fossil Fuel Treaty. Even before the current supply constraints and high price of oil due to the war in Iran these countries have understood the threat dependence on fossil fuels poses to their security and to global climate stability. The current conflict has proven that even more so It is an honour for us to support their leadership as they prepare  for the first diplomatic conference on fossil fuel phase out in Santa Marta where they and other countries participating in the development of the Fossil Fuel Treaty will be a crucial voice for international cooperation, high ambition and fair timelines and financial mechanisms to support a fair phase out.”

ABOUT THE FOSSIL FUEL TREATY INITIATIVE

The idea of a Fossil Fuel Treaty was born in the Pacific, a region that has long understood that its survival depends on ending the world’s dependence on coal, oil and gas. The movement gained significant momentum in Port Vila in March 2023, following the unprecedented impact of two Category 4 cyclones striking Vanuatu within the same week, when six nations issued a collective call for a global fossil fuel treaty – building on earlier endorsements from Vanuatu and Tuvalu. Today, that movement has grown to 18 countries, more than 150 subnational governments, 4,000 civil society organisations, and over one million individual endorsees worldwide.

Proposed import requirements for fresh blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) for human consumption

Source: NZ Ministry for Primary Industries

Have your say

From 31 March to 15 May 2026, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) invites comment on proposed import requirements for fresh blueberries (Vaccinium spp.) for human consumption.

This page outlines:

  • our assessment of market access requests from Chile, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, and the USA
  • our approach to preventing the introduction of harmful pests and diseases through fresh blueberry imports.

We want your feedback, technical information, industry knowledge, and suggestions on:

  • pests requiring additional measures that we may have missed
  • the measures we’re proposing
  • the feasibility of importing under the proposed requirements
  • our consultation process.

Reasons for developing an import health standard for blueberries

Five countries (Chile, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, and the USA) have requested to export blueberries to New Zealand. To protect our environment, economy, and health, we need to ensure that pests, which may harm them, are managed to an acceptable level on imported blueberries. At the same time, we seek to enable safe and fair trade with our international partners.

Our goal is to strike the right balance, keeping New Zealand safe and enabling trade that benefits our economy and our trading partners. It is important that our biosecurity measures align with international standards and are evidence-based.

New Zealand leads protection of world’s rarest seabirds

Source: NZ Department of Conservation

Date:  31 March 2026

At the Convention’s Conference of Parties (COP15) in Campo Grande, Brazil, Parties yesterday (NZ time) agreed to list flesh-footed shearwaters and 26 species of gadfly petrels under the Convention.

DOC Principal Science Advisor and seabird specialist Graeme Taylor says New Zealand proposed the listing to increase global awareness of these seabirds and provide an avenue for international cooperation to ensure their survival.

“Gadfly petrels are among the rarest seabirds in the world. They’re named for their speedy, erratic, and weaving flight pattern, which resembles the behaviour of gadflies – biting insects that pester livestock,” Graeme says.

“Unfortunately, gadfly petrels also face many threats at their breeding sites and on their migratory paths, such as invasive species, habitat loss, climate change and light pollution.

“We have a special interest in them because five of the now-listed gadfly petrel species breed on New Zealand’s offshore islands, notably the critically threatened Chatham Island taiko, with fewer than 200 mature individuals left.”

Flesh-footed shearwaters also breed on our offshore islands and are at risk from fisheries bycatch.

The listing will require strict protection for the most at-risk species and promote increased research and knowledge-sharing on the species and the threats they face. It also provides a catalyst for international bodies to enhance measures to address threats at-sea such as vessel lighting and fisheries bycatch rules on the high seas.

New Zealand worked closely with other Parties to the Convention to get the proposal through, particularly the countries where these birds breed, including Australia, Brazil, Chile, Cook Islands, Dominican Republic, Fiji and France.

Background information

Gadfly petrels are found in all ocean basins, with many species breeding in New Zealand and ranging throughout the Pacific region.

Five of the gadfly petrel species now listed under the Conventional on Migratory Species breed on New Zealand’s offshore islands: Chatham Island taiko/tāiko (Nationally Critical), Chatham petrel/ranguru (Nationally Vulnerable), white-naped petrel, Cook’s petrel/tītī and Pycroft’s petrel. Flesh-footed shearwater/toanui (Relict) also breed on New Zealand’s offshore islands.

Changan and CAOA Strengthen Long-Term Commitment to Brazil with New R$ 5 Billion Investment Cycle and Breakthrough Flex-Fuel Technology

Source: Media Outreach

ANÁPOLIS, BRAZIL – Media OutReach Newswire – 30 March 2026 – Changan Automobile and CAOA today marked a new chapter for Brazil’s automotive industry with the inauguration of a highly automated production line in Anápolis and the roll-off of the first Brazilmade CHANGAN UNIT. The ceremony, attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Vice-President Geraldo Alckmin and H.E. Zhu Qingqiao, Chinese Embassy in Brazil, signals a new phase of high-tech industrialization and green mobility in the country.

The milestone underscores Changan’s commitment to the Brazilian market, backed by continuous investment in production capacity, technological modernization, and advanced manufacturing. The inauguration launches a new USD 950 million (R$ 5 billion) investment cycle for 2026-2028. Combined with the USD 570 million (R$ 3 billion) invested from 2023, total investment in Anápolis reaches USD 1.52 billion (R$ 8 billion), with annual capacity for 90,000 units.

“For Changan, Brazil is not only a place to invest, but a land where we committed to building a long-term future,” said Zhu Huarong, Chairman of China Changan Automobile Group.

A Breakthrough in Local Engineering

The UNI-T resulted from three years of collaboration between 200 Chinese and Brazilian engineers. At its core is the advanced 1.5 Turbo GDi BlueCore Flex engine—a powertrain engineered by Changan and calibrated by CAOA’s specialized team for any ethanol-petrol blend.

This “Next Level” SUV underwent 200,000 km of testing across Brazil’s diverse climates, ensuring durability, efficiency and performance under local usage patterns. It combines global engineering with localized innovations—such as a fully localized Portuguese voicecontrol system and connected cockpit—delivering an experience tailored to Brazilian drivers.

“The UNI-T represents far more than a new model. It demonstrates that Brazil can establish itself as a global hub for high-technology automotive engineering and production,” says Carlos Alberto de Oliveira Andrade Filho, Co-President of CAOA.

Driving Brazil’s reindustrialization plan

The CHANGAN UNI-T anchors these localized powertrains. The investment focuses on digitalizing assembly lines and workforce training, supporting the federal government’s MOVER program.

Leveraging this Flex-Fuel and HEV foundation, Changan plans to introduce a full range of hybrid and electrified variants, strengthening local supply chains and R&D. With over 60 dealerships opening in 2026, Changan is expanding sales footprint while embedding advanced factory and powertrain technologies into Brazil’s industrial landscape—poised to help lead the next phase of intelligent, sustainable mobility.

  3. Since its official launch in March 2024, Bogutai® has sustained strong growth momentum, driven by a solid commercialization strategy and successful academic engagement. In 2025, Bogutai® demonstrated rapid market adoption in China, achieving a remarkable year-on-year revenue growth of 111.0%.
  4. In May 2025, the Group’s second ophthalmology product, 金因康® (Diquafosol Sodium Eye Drops), received marketing approval from the China National Medical Products Administration (“NMPA”), marking a significant milestone in expanding the Group’s ophthalmic portfolio following GeneSoft®. The Group is actively preparing its launch and marketing strategy. In addition to leveraging synergy with GeneSoft® and its established online and offline distribution network for rapid market penetration, 金因康® will specifically target the mid-to-high-end segment of dry eye patients outside the hospital setting, those who prioritize long-term efficacy and premium product quality.
  5. In June 2025, the Group officially launched the high-end series GeneQueens® of 肌顏態® and the medical device brand 金因敷®, marking two key milestones in its strategic expansion into the integrated”Drug, Medical Device, and Aesthetics”field. These product launches reflect the Group’s commitment to enhancing its skin health product matrix and addressing evolving consumer needs for efficacy-driven, medical-grade skincare in both functional skincare and post-aesthetic recovery.
  6. In July 2025, the marketing application of Isavuconazonium sulfate capsules were officially accepted by the NMPA. Isavuconazonium sulfate capsules are expected to be approved for launch as early as the fourth quarter of 2026, offering a safer, more effective, and high-quality treatment option for patients suffering from invasive fungal infections.
  7. In 2025, the Group established a strategic partnership with Wenzhou Medical University to explore a thermosensitive gel formulation combining EGF and bFGF, leveraging the university’s proven expertise in bFGF production. As a key growth factor in regenerative medicine, bFGF is highly effective in promoting granulation and angiogenesis.
  8. Towards the end of 2025, the Group repositioned its long-term strategy from “Stable Growth” to “Innovation-Driven,” signifying a bold transformation from an integrated pharmaceutical company into a global pioneer in regenerative medicine. The Group is advancing a transformative R&D strategy spanning four key areas: muscular-skeletal regeneration, skin regeneration, ocular regeneration, and ENT regeneration.

Annual Results
For 2025, the Group recorded a revenue of approximately HK$586.2 million, representing an increase of 6.0% YoY. Revenue from Bogutai® increased from approximately HK$ $63.5 million to approximately HK$ 134.0 million, representing a significant increase of 111.0%. Revenue generated from GeneTime® was approximately HK$220.4 million, representing an increase of 10.9% YoY. GeneSoft® recorded a 7.9% YoY decrease in revenue from approximately HK$41.9 million to approximately HK$38.6 million due to intense market competition. Pinup® recorded a decrease of 29.4% in revenue from approximately HK$244.2 million to approximately HK$172.5 million for the Year. In 2025, the Group adopted a more disciplined and selective hospital-supply strategy under volume-based procurement (VBP) to safeguard margins, particularly in regions where policy adjustments intensified price competition. At the same time, the Group accelerated diversification into pharmacy networks beyond traditional hospital channels and optimized its supply chain to improve cost and profitability. In 2024, Boshutai® was successfully included in the VBP by the Henan Seventeen Provinces Alliance and the procurement validity period is set for two years. Hospitals in many provinces began procuring Boshutai® in 2025. Following the destocking and a low base in 2024, revenue from Boshutai® increased from approximately HK$10.2 million to approximately HK$15.5 million, representing a significant increase of 51.9%. 肌顏態® generated approximately HK$2.8 million in revenue in its early stage. The limited revenue scale reflected several factors, including a relatively small number of products approved and launched during the Year, and the fact that specialized marketing and distribution teams were still being built and optimized.

Gross profit was approximately HK$487.6 million, representing an increase of 5.7% as compared with approximately HK$461.1 million in 2024, and gross profit margin increased by 0.2 percentage points YoY to 83.2%. The Group delivered another year of record-breaking profit, achieving approximately HK$93.3 million for the Year, representing an increase of 12.7% YoY. Net profit margin increased by 1.0 percentage points YoY to 15.9%. These results demonstrate the Group’s success in converting product innovation into market value through strong commercialization execution and financial discipline. The earnings per share reached approximately HK$1.56 cents, reflecting a growth of 15.5% YoY.

Prospects
Regenerative medicine has emerged as a rapidly developing field, focused on repairing, replacing, or regenerating damaged tissues or organs using cells, tissues, or genetic material. The sector has the potential to treat and address the underlying causes of chronic and advanced diseases. The global regenerative medicine market was approximately USD51.7 billion in 2025. It is projected to grow from USD63.0 billion in 2026 to USD555.6 billion by 2034, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 31.3%. The increasing prevalence of chronic and hereditary diseases, together with rising healthcare expenditure in both developed and emerging markets, is expected to support continued growth in the regenerative medicine industry.

Mr. Kingsley Leung, Chairman of Uni-Bio Science, commented, “In 2025, we are proud to have delivered another year of record profitability, marking a significant milestone in our growth journey. During the year, we entered a new phase of strategic development. In anticipation of an increasingly favorable market environment, we advanced our strategic transition from ‘stable growth’ to ‘innovation-driven’ development, with a clear focus on four diversified therapeutic areas: musculoskeletal regeneration, skin regeneration, ocular regeneration, and ENT regeneration.

With multiple products progressing through our pipeline and accelerating toward commercialization, the Group has continued to broaden its marketing channels. In addition to strengthening our established offline hospital networks, deepening partnerships with local distributors, and hosting academic conferences, we have actively expanded into online e-commerce platforms to enhance product accessibility and extend our market reach. Our ambitions extend well beyond China. During the year, we formed a strategic partnership with Kexing Biopharm to accelerate the global expansion of Bogutai®. Through this collaboration, we have granted Kexing Biopharm exclusive commercialization rights for Bogutai® in six international markets—Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Colombia, Argentina, and Mexico—laying a solid foundation for global growth. We expect these markets to begin contributing revenue as early as the end of 2026. At the same time, we are advancing the FDA approval process for Bogutai® in the United States, aiming for approval as early as 2027.

In December, we also entered into a strategic collaboration with Wenzhou Medical University and the People’s Government of Ouhai District, Wenzhou, to foster a synergistic ‘government–university–enterprise’ model, further strengthening our capabilities in regenerative medicine. Supported by strong partnerships with local governments and leading academic institutions, we are well positioned to build a world-class biomedical ecosystem and enhance our end-to-end innovation capabilities.”

Bertelsmann Stiftung BTI Survey 2026: More Autocracies Worldwide – But Democratic Resistance Is Growing

Source: Media Outreach

Democracy is on the defensive. This is shown by the Bertelsmann Stiftung’s Transformation Index 2026 (BTI). The BTI was first surveyed twenty years ago, when democracies were still in the majority. Today, 56 percent of the 137 countries surveyed by the BTI are ruled autocratically. However, this rarely leads to better governance. Autocracies are more susceptible to corruption, less capable of shaping the future, and less consensus-oriented. However, examples such as Poland and Brazil show that social resistance and political competition can pave the way back to democracy.

GÜTERSLOH, GERMANY – Newsaktuell – 26 March 2026 – A majority of 77 of the 137 states surveyed by the BTI are now ruled autocratically and are taking increasingly repressive action against the opposition, the media and civil society. Of these countries, 52 are hard-line autocracies in which fundamental rights are completely disregarded – more than at any time since the survey began in 2006. But autocratic tendencies are also gaining ground in numerous democracies. “Many elected governments have undermined core democratic institutions in order to stay in power, and this paves the way for autocracy,” says democracy expert Sabine Donner.

In 54 percent of the countries, elections no longer meet minimum standards. In some countries, such as Gabon or Niger, they were suspended after military coups, while in Belarus, Russia and Rwanda they are strictly controlled legitimizating rituals. However, numerous free and fair elections also led to peaceful changes of government. In Madagascar, Tanzania and Venezuela, mass protests following rigged elections were violently suppressed, but strengthened political mobilization beyond the election date.

Examples such as El Salvador, Serbia and Turkey show that the repeatedly touted promise of authoritarian efficiency is rarely fulfilled. Corruption is insufficiently combated in more than 100 countries, two thirds of which are autocracies. “In autocracies, loyalty must be rewarded and positions secured,” says BTI expert Hauke Hartmann. “The supposed efficiency of authoritarian regimes is a myth.”

However, persistent grievances continue to ensure that protests by dissatisfied citizens show no sign of abating. In Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, protests forced a democratic opening, while a democratic turnaround was achieved in Brazil and Poland. “The BTI shows how much pressure democratic institutions are coming under – at the same time, we are seeing remarkably lively resistance to their erosion in many places,” says Daniela Schwarzer, Member of the Executive Board, Bertelsmann Stiftung. “This ability to mobilize, which comes above all from an active civil society, is a key potential for democratic renewal.”

Additional information:
Since 2006, the Bertelsmann Stiftung’s Transformation Index has analyzed the quality of democracy, market economy and governance in 137 countries every two years. Currently, 23 OECD countries, such as Germany and the USA, are not part of the study. The study was carried out between February 1, 2023 and January 31, 2025.

Four outstanding women in extractives were recognised today for their achievements, receiving top honours at the industry’s annual awards.
New Zealand Minerals Council, Aggregate and Quarry Association (AQA), and MinEx hosted the Komatsu New Zealand Women in Extractives event and awards ceremony in Hamilton.
Megan Williams, from Reefton, was named MITO Emerging Star for her work as Senior Sustainability Advisor at Endura Mining’s Snowy River gold mine.
Megan is well known on the West Coast for building strong relationships with regulators, community groups, and colleagues and for being focused on the best possible environmental outcomes. Megan joined the team at Snowy River last year after playing a central role in the Reefton Restoration Project following the closure of the Globe Progress gold mine near Reefton. Her professionalism and approachable style have seen her work with colleagues to develop innovative ways to ensure Snowy River is a sustainable, environmentally responsible mine.
Nicole Pierce was named MinEx Kristy Christensen Memorial winner for her contribution to making everyone feel valued and included in her role as Quarry Operations Coordinator at Waiotahi Contractors in Whakatāne.
Nicole creates a safe, inclusive environment where people feel supported to speak up, are listened to, and are genuinely cared for. Her approachability, empathy, and practical leadership strengthen wellbeing, capability and team morale, making a lasting, positive impact across the quarry. She is a trusted sounding board and plays a key role in supporting mental wellbeing, encouraging open conversations and helping team members work through both work related and personal challenges.
Heather McKay, from the West Coast, was named IOQNZ Leader of the Year for her work as General Manager Environment and Sustainability at Westland Mineral Sands.
Heather’s leadership is grounded in initiative, influence, collaboration and a genuine commitment to bring people together to achieve outcomes that benefit both industry and the community. She works with iwi, community, and technical groups, helping shift sustainability from a function to a shared mindset. Through her work, Heather is helping demonstrate how extractive industries can operate responsibly, engage meaningfully with communities, and deliver lasting environmental and economic value.
Sue Bonham-Carter, from Nelson, is the AusIMM New Zealand Extractives Trailblazer, acknowledging her 35 years in the industry and her current role as Acting General Manager Resource Development at Bathurst Resources and Director BCP Associates (NZ).
In that time, Sue has worked around the world from Laos, Colombia and Africa, to Australia, Canada and New Zealand. She is the kind of trailblazer who reshapes an industry through unwavering technical excellence, calm judgement, and a belief in the potential of every person she works with. She leads with integrity, uplifts others, and shares her considerable knowledge at conferences and technical gatherings. Alongside an impressive career, Sue has had her eye on the next generation and has raised three brilliant STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) qualified daughters.
“In our fourth year of these awards, we continue to see the depth of talent from women in the extractives industry, which is extraordinary considering they are the minority of workers,” says AQA and MinEx CEO Wayne Scott. “We had 20 entries for these awards, and we want to acknowledge every one of them as a talent we want to keep.”
“It is interesting to see this year the work being done on the important environmental side of extractive operations and how women working in this space are collaborative and taking others with them for wider community outcomes and acceptance,” says New Zealand Minerals Council CEO Josie Vidal.
“Each woman has an inspiring story, and we hope people outside the industry will take the time to listen to them and learn about the many positive impacts of the extractives industry,” Vidal says.

Robot Rampage: Enthusiasts watch epic final fight in Auckland

Source: Radio New Zealand

Team Brazil was crowned champion at the Robot Rampage World Cup. Robot Rampage

Fought inside a bulletproof cage, a battle between combat robots is not for the faint-hearted.

It’s the grand final of Robot Rampage World Cup, a four day competition between teams from New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, and the United States.

Sparks are a common sight during the battle between the bots. Robot Rampage

Unfolding on a quiet Sunday evening at Auckland’s shopping suburb Onehunga, the venue is packed with enthusiasts.

Ten-year-old Elon Jacobs secured a front row seat to catch the sparks, the clashes, and sometimes even a small fire.

Ten year old Elon Jacobs brought a robot he is building to the battle. Ke-Xin Li/RNZ

“It’s really loud and there’s a lot of robots fighting today. So far there’s been a lot of action and it’s been very fun.”

He had been sketching robots since he was four years old, and thinks robotics will definitely be a big part of his future.

On Sunday, the battle was between Brazil and USA.

Thirteen-year-old Josephine Estevez gave her predictions.

“Brazil looks like it’s winning. I do enjoy watching different robots. I really like Touro. That was a great design. Displaying blade and it being a mostly defense robot, it’s very locked in on all sides and very sturdy looking.”

Josephine Estevez and Kira Matevie are enjoying the battle between the robots. Ke-Xin Li/RNZ

Her mom, Kira Matevie, the bigger robotic fan among the two, has her eyes laid on other robots.

“For tonight, I’ll have to say my favorite is Jump Rope because he’s a showboat, I like that. But my favorite robot to date is Black Rose. It reminds me of a vacuum cleaner.”

The matches are livestreamed for free, but that didn’t stop Ashley and Bryan Pierre booking a trip from USA to watch in person.

“It’s a neat format that they have here. You have five robots and basically until all your robots are out, you keep going. So, they kind of need a little bit of strategy to play. Do they want to fix a robot after the match if they win? They only got eight minutes to fix it. Not a lot of time if they got a lot of damage.”

Robot Rampage

After Bryan introduced Ashley to battlebots, robots quickly infiltrated every part of the couple’s life.

“Our wedding rings are made of a battle bot. We’re from Wisconsin and Team Wyachi is from Wisconsin. One of their main bot, Son of Wyachi, they sent us a signed part of Son of Wyachi.”

Ashley and Bryan Pierre’s wedding rings are made of a part of one of their favorite combat robots. Ke-Xin Li/RNZ

Ashley said turning the signed part into rings is another miracle.

“We randomly met someone who could work titanium and they were able to save the signature and make 4 rings out of it.”

Back inside the cage, the decisive moment arrives.

As Brazil’s Touro Feather defeated USA’s last standing bot, they were declared champions!

The decisive moment when Team Brazil defeated Team USA. Ke-Xin Li/RNZ

Team Captain Matheus Freitas said the victory means a lot.

“It’s such an amazing fight. We are from 4 different teams from Brazil, we designed two new robots that we put to test here. It did such a great job, and we are very excited for the results. It’s our first time here on New Zealand. I hope that we come on more times in the future.”

His family had been up early to watch him fight.

“When the live stream started, it’s 3am in Brazil and they [stayed up] just to watch and send good energies to us.”

The team brings together members from Brazil’s top robot combat teams, and Freitas said their strategy paid off.

In between fights, the Brazil team works on fixing their robots. Ke-Xin Li/RNZ

“We won the first fight with Dark Khaos and then we unfortunately got some damage and then we swapped that, very strategically, and then we brought Jublieu. Jublieu did such a good damage on Synthesis 30, and then we put Touro, Touro did the rest of the job.”

The competition format means teams have very little time to fix their robots. Robot Rampage

Getting to New Zealand was a battle in itself.

Together, the Brazilians travelled with more than 180 kilograms of gear.

Team member João Marcos Cavalheiro recounted his journey.

“From Brazil to Miami, Miami to Atlanta, Atlanta to Austin, then we drove to Dallas, and Dallas to Houston, and Houston to New Zealand, six flights.”

Meanwhile, runnerup Team USA is looking on the bright side.

Team USA is fully made up of members without engineering backgrounds. Ke-Xin Li/RNZ

Captain Sam Hanson is proud the team is made up entirely of members with no engineering background, and encourages anyone to give robot building a go.

“One of them is a student. One is a nurse. I managed a farmer’s market. I’ve been building fighting robots since the early 2000s. All the information is on the internet. You don’t have to be an engineer. You just have to want to do it.”

Hosting the event was Robot Rampage, a venue founded by friends Jack Barker and Nick Mabey.

Jack Barker and Nick Mabey are founders of Robot Rampage. Outside of hosting events, the space also runs robot building and fighting experiences. Ke-Xin Li/RNZ

Barker said the venue has 90 seats, but there were more people standing.

“I’m really stoked with the turnout. We’ve had six shows and every single seat has been sold out.”

He said there is a special appeal to the format.

“Normally it’s a 1v1 fight, but this is a 5v5 fight format. It’s more exciting because instead of supporting one robot for one fight, you get to support your country between five to nine matches.”

Barker said it took them two years to build the venue with a bulletproof cage, and now they intend to fully utilise it.

Their next event – Kings Crown – is scheduled for May at Robot Rampage in Onehunga.

Too expensive to smile: Calls grow for universal, Te Tiriti-consistent dental care

Source: Radio New Zealand

Nearly half of adults in Aotearoa are avoiding dental care because they cannot afford it, leaving many in chronic pain, at risk of serious infection, or in need of hospital treatment.

New research and frontline experiences are painting what advocates describe as a system failing to meet basic health needs, with growing calls for dental care to be fully integrated into the public health system.

Dental for All, a coalition of health workers, unions, community organisations and advocates travelled the country last year speaking directly with whānau about their experiences.

Dental for All campaigner Max Harris said the stories they heard were confronting.

“We heard about the shame and pain people face when they can’t get to the dentist, and how problems get worse over time,” he told RNZ.

“We also heard about the home remedies people resort to, things like using pliers or fishing wire to pull teeth, or relying on painkillers just to get through.”

There are growing calls for dental care to be fully integrated into the public health system.

A system built without teeth

According to the latest Ministry of Health survey, 47 percent of adult New Zealanders reported not visiting a dentist due to cost, with even higher rates among Māori and Pasifika.

Research commissioned by Dental for All also estimated untreated oral disease was costing the country around $2.5 billion each year in lost productivity and $3.1b in reduced quality of life.

“That is people missing work, missing job interviews, or living with constant pain and stigma,” Harris said.

“When you compare that with estimates that universal dental care could cost between $1 and $2 billion a year, it starts to make economic sense as well as human sense.”

According to a Talbot Mills poll in 2023, 74 percent of New Zealanders agreed that adult dental care should be funded in the same way it is funded for tamariki. So why wasn’t it?

Harris said that gap dated back to the system’s foundations.

“When the public healthcare system was set up in 1938, some dentists lobbied to carve teeth out of the system and it has essentially stayed that way ever since.”

Across the country, demand for affordable dental care continues to grow.

At teaching clinics run by the University of Otago Faculty of Dentistry, patients could receive reduced cost treatment from senior dental students under supervision.

In Auckland, the waitlist for student led care sat at around 950 people and was currently closed due to capacity.

Across both Auckland and Dunedin clinics, more than 14,800 patients were treated in 2025, delivering nearly 60,000 appointments.

Director of Dental Hospital and Clinics Janine Cochrane said demand had remained strong in recent years, reflecting wider national trends.

But even with those services, need continued to outstrip supply.

In July last year, Auckland City Mission opened a free dental clinic aimed at people who had struggled to access care.

In its first seven months, the clinic treated around 380 people and built a waitlist of more than 100.

Director of housing and health Brendan Short told RNZ that many patients had gone years without treatment.

“The people that we support have been marginalised from mainstream and public health care for a very long time,” he said.

“It is really clear that there is not enough funding for oral care in New Zealand for the general population. Dental care is essential healthcare and it seems that this is a blind spot for us as a nation.”

Living with pain

Short said the impact of untreated dental issues went far beyond physical pain.

“Avoiding social situations, hiding one’s smile, or even missing job opportunities are everyday realities,” he said.

He said many people had normalised living with pain.

“It is quite common for people to live with pain, to think that what they are putting up with is normal or is okay, and it is not.”

The Auckland City Mission dental clinic operated three days a week and relied heavily on volunteer dentists.

“This is not possible or achievable for us without those volunteer dentists. They are superstars,” Short said, adding that some even travelled from outside Auckland, including as far as Taranaki.

Volunteer dentist Roger Tiang told RNZ that demand was constant at the clinic, highlighting the need for these spaces.

“Every time I come in my shift is fully booked,” he said.

Tiang said cost and sometimes discomfort with mainstream services were key barriers and that delaying care allowed small issues to escalate.

“If we do not catch things early, problems get bigger and we end up dealing with much bigger issues than we would have if we had seen them earlier.”

After more than 25 years in dentistry, he believed oral healthcare should be treated like any other part of the health system.

“People might not realise it, but if you cannot chew your food properly or you are living with infections in your mouth, that can affect your overall health.

“It is part of your health. Just like the rest of the health system in New Zealand, there is public healthcare and dentistry should be part of that as well.”

Longstanding inequities for Māori

For Māori, barriers to dental care were often compounded by cost, distance, and access, layered on top of longstanding inequities within the health system.

ActionStation and Dental for All advocate Jasmine Taankink said poor oral health outcomes for Māori could not be separated from colonisation.

“We know that upon arrival to Aotearoa, English settlers were really impressed with the overall physical health of our tūpuna Māori, especially their oral health. That’s quite widely documented,” she said.

“Our tūpuna Māori didn’t have cavities, they didn’t have massive oral health problems. So poor oral health is just another negative implication of colonisation and us not being able to exercise our tino rangatiratanga”

She said solutions must be grounded in Māori led approaches.

“We have the expertise within our own communities to develop solutions that work for us.”

Tumuaki of Te Ao Mārama (New Zealand Māori Dental Association) Leeann Waaka says whānau should not have to suffer in silence any longer. Supplied / Leeann Waaka

Leeann Waaka, dental therapist at Hauora a Toi and Tumuaki of Te ao Mārama (New Zealand Māori Dental Association) said the situation had remained largely unchanged for decades – with many left suffering in silence.

“The current suffering for our people is real, and it has not got any better since, well, what, 30 years?”

Waaka said while cost was a major issue for whānau, accessibility, especially in rural areas, remained a problem.

“When you are looking at a current structure and your lens is a holistic lens, it really does not fit.

“Whenever you need something, you should be able to access it, right there and then. Unfortunately that is not the case for dental.”

After travelling the country with the Dental for All kaupapa, she said the stories shared were confronting.

“Many have suffered in silence for a long time, It’s heartbreaking.

“I come from up north. I knew it was bad up there, but when we went up there for the roadshow, I don’t even think we could have imagined just how bad it is … It is inhumane.”

Waaka, alongside Dental for All and Te Ao Mārama, was pushing for a Te Tiriti consistent system – which would mean properly resourcing Māori providers and enabling iwi and hapū to design services that meet the needs of their people.

“It is reimagining the system and starting to rebuild it to what it needs to be to serve our whānau. Our people deserve better.”

Dental for All campaign set out on a national roadshow last year, hearing concerns from whānau and building public support over communities. Supplied / Dental for All

Looking overseas for solutions

Dental for All’s latest research pointed to countries including Niue, Japan, Brazil, Canada and the United Kingdom, where dental care was integrated into public health systems.

Harris said those models showed change was achievable.

“It ultimately comes down to political will,” he said.

“We have seen other countries make the decision that oral health is part of overall health and design their systems accordingly.”

Dental for All was now developing a detailed policy proposal outlining how such a system could be introduced in Aotearoa.

“This could be something we look back on as a once in a generation change to strengthen our healthcare system.”

Waaka said the focus must remain on equity and wellbeing.

“All knowledge systems matter, and coming together to bring the best of those knowledge systems is key for when we are serving our people,” she said.

“Our people deserve the best and nothing less.”

Football Ferns named for World Cup Oceania Qualifiers Finals in NZ

The Football Ferns squad has been named for the Oceania Qualifiers finals in Aotearoa next month, where the side will aim to book a ticket to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 in Brazil.

The squad sees Ferns’ regulars Ally Green, Jacqui Hand, Gabi Rennie, and Kate Taylor, added to the group, who won all three Oceania Qualifiers games in the Solomon Islands earlier this month without conceding a goal.

The Football Ferns will first face Fiji in the semi-finals on Sunday, 12 April at FMG Stadium Waikato in Hamilton.

The winner of that game will then take on the winner of Papua New Guinea v American Samoa on Wednesday, 15 April at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland, with the victorious side securing qualification to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027.

Football Ferns head coach Michael Mayne said because the games come so quickly after the group stage, the decision was made to retain the vast majority of that squad.

“So we have real consistency and can hit the ground running once the players are back home,” Mayne said.

“The tournament in the Solomon Islands was a great start to the year, and while the scores reflected the difference in quality we have over those OFC nations, what was pleasing was the way in which we stayed connected to what we wanted to get from the fixtures in the way we played and approached those matches very professionally as a group.”

“The reality is, we have not played in New Zealand in over a year, so being back in Aotearoa is a real privilege and the prospect of qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 in front of our home fans and families is very special and not something we get to do very often.”

This World Water Day: Clean Water Is More Than Survival — It’s a Pathway to Women’s Empowerment – World Vision

Source: World Vision

  • A quarter of the world’s population don’t have access to safe drinking water
  • Women and girls are especially impacted, with some walking up to 15 kilometres for water
  • World Vision aims to reach 30 million people with clean water by 2030.

This World Water Day, World Vision New Zealand is putting the spotlight on the global water crisis as a quarter of the world’s population still cannot access safe drinking water.

More than 2 billion people globally lack access to safe drinking water, with women and girls bearing the greatest burden. In some communities, women walk up to 15 kilometres a day to collect water — a task that can consume hours and limit their opportunities for education, work and participation in community life.

World Vision New Zealand International Partnerships Director Stephen Court says it is unacceptable that so many people are still denied access to such a basic human right.

“It’s unacceptable that in 2026 a quarter of the world’s population still doesn’t have access to safe drinking water. Clean water is a basic human right, yet millions of families are forced to live without it.

Without safe water, disease spreads, children miss school, and women are prevented from participating fully in work and community life. It traps families in a cycle of poverty that should no longer exist.”

New World Vision research in Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, finds that combining water access with behaviour change and economic empowerment activities can create lasting impact.

This family-centred approach integrates water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services with financial literacy training, savings groups, livelihood support, and engagement around social norms.

Court says when this approach is adopted women report higher personal income and household savings, greater participation in financial decisions, increased confidence, and stronger leadership within their communities.

He highlights the changes seen in Rumate, Kenya, where women once walked up to four hours a day to collect water, often returning with only a fraction of what their families needed.

After a borehole was installed in the community, women no longer had to spend hours collecting water and instead had time to pursue income-generating activities. Many formed savings groups, which enabled them to start small businesses and invest in their families.

“Access to safe water didn’t just meet a basic need — it unlocked opportunity,” says Court.

“When safe water is close to home, women gain something incredibly valuable: time. That time can be used to earn an income, participate in community life and invest in their families’ futures.”

The impact extends far beyond individual households.

“In many communities, the time women and girls spend collecting water goes unseen and undervalued. When safe water is accessible, women gain time, income opportunities and a stronger voice in their households and communities.

World Vision reaches one new person with clean water every 10 seconds, and we are aiming to reach 30 million people with clean water between 2023 and 2030.”

Court says this World Water Day, the message is clear:  “Safe water is about far more than survival. It is the foundation for dignity, equality, and opportunity. When women gain access to clean water, they gain time, income, and influence — and entire communities thrive.”

New Zealanders who want to help ensure children have access to safe drinking water can support World Vision through its Gift Catalogue, which includes the option to provide clean water for a childhttps://www.worldvision.org.nz/give-now/smiles-gift/#/product/smiles-clean-water-for-a-child
